No aberrant sounds in 4th gear but in 5th some whirring and creeking and grinding.....(is it a bearing going out?)...also in 1,2 3 there is some light whirring and minor clicking.....(if I baby it it will drive just fine but one mechanic told me it was going to go eventually and blow out the transm casing....I dont have the $1100.00 he wants to repair it........can I do this myself??....am really poor right now)

Drive it till it drops, and then get a used one from an auto wrecker. You could do it yourself if you have someone helping you who knows something.

It shouldn't be. Most of them will give you 30 day warrantee.

I am more scared of a rebuilt transmission than a used one. I have never had a rebuilt last nearly as long as a factory built. Some things are better new, some things are better used. When you drive to the parts store, you get there on used parts.

Just call around, and ask if they have warrantee on their stuff. Go look at the vehicle it came out of. Chances are it's still in it. Check the miles.

Most likely your lay-shaft bearing is failing and the tranny will have to be removed to repair it. Do it NOW because if you keep driving you will add to your woes. The forward layshaft bearing is accesable by just removing the bellhousing assy, from the tranny (easy, cheap fix if you get in early).

I have a 1999 Nissan frontier 2.4 5 speed transmission it will only go in first and second gear will not go into 3rd 4th or 5th or reverse clutch seems fine what's the problem

Hello. It seems the 'shift fork' is either 'misaligned' and/or 'bent' in 3rd, 4th, 5th and REVERSE. It's, also, possible those gears are 'stripped' on their shaft(s); making driving that truck, in those gears, impossible. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.

I'm missing a switch on top my manual transmission on 91 geo tracker, that I was told that it was a 5th gear switch... can't find anything to show this. Is there such a switch?

Not sure what you mean by "switch" but shifting from 4th gear to 5th gear is the same motion as shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear.

2006 Chevy equinox transmission making a dull whirring noise in 4th &5th gear.

Have a pressure test done on the box first to determine if it is pump or other mechanical failure . Remove the pan and check for metal / clutch parts in the oil and filter. IF there are then seek advice from an accredited transmission rebuilder as it may mean transmission out for a replacement box. ( bearing / shaft failure in the sun/ planetary gears)

2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission lost 2nd, 4th and reverse but still has 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

No 5th gear or reverse

I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier, 2wd. I was driving back from lunch one day, and the 5th gear stopped working. Then the next day, the reverse stopped working. It switches into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th just fine. Please help. What do you think it could be. I have no money to take it to the shop
