SOURCE: how to replace the lower

Ford states that you should replace the entire knuckle, however since I'm an Engineer (Mechanical and Electronic) and basically cannot stand other Engineers (they are usually full of themselves) I look at things a different way. I had the same problem and since I'm a bit lazy in my old age, I hired 2 different road mechanics to replace the ball joints on my 1998 Taurus SE. Both of them beat themselves silly with hammers to try to remove the old ones with no success. (They gave up & stated that Ithey would have to replace the entire knuckle assempby. I sent them on their way. (this was 2 seperate occasions a day apart). (they both also claimed ASE certified) The next day I went to Auto Zone, purchased the new ball joints and did it myself. After removing the hardware (nuts, snap rings, etc) I got out my air chisel. Had them BOTH out in about 3 minutes. Good luck. The entire job took me less than an hour. Good luck!!

SOURCE: upper & lower Ford Ranger ball joints replacement

Approx.$250 in parts & rest is labor. Probably 3 to 4 hrs labor at most, even at 5 hrs labor, that's $100/hr labor. It must include alignment after the repairs, correct? Not sure what your going rate for labor is in your area. Probably wouldn't hurt to call around for a second opinion& estimate just to be sure.

Lower Ball Joint Inspection

  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Prior to carrying out any inspection of the ball joints inspect the wheel bearing.
  4. Have an assistant pull inward and outward on the top and the bottom tire. Mount a suitable dial indicator and measure the movement between the ball joint and the lower arm. If the movement is at or exceeds 0.03 in. (0.75 mm) install a new ball joint.

Please check.

Ball joint repair and how do you do it

To perform the following procedure, the lower control arm must be removed from the vehicle. Refer to Removal And Installation for that procedure.

  1. Using a screw driver or other suitable tool, pry the seal boot off of the ball joint assembly
  2. Position receiving cup, Special Tool 6758 to support lower control arm when removing ball joint assembly. Install Remover, Special Tool 6919 on the top of the ball joint assembly.
  3. Using the arbor press, press the ball joint assembly completely out of the lower control arm.

NOTE: When installing ball joint in lower control arm, position the ball joint in control arm so notch in ball joint stud is in the direction shown. This will ease assembly of the ball joint to the steering when installing pinch bolt.

  1. By hand, position ball joint into ball joint bore of lower control arm. Be sure ball joint is not cocked in the bore of the control arm, this will cause the ball joint to bind when being pressed into control arm.

  1. Position control arm with installed ball joint, in an arbor press with Receiving Cup, Special Tool 6758 supporting the lower control arm. Then center Installer, Special Tool 6908-4 on the bottom of the ball joint
  2. Carefully align all pieces. Then press the ball joint into the lower control arm until it is completely seated against surface of lower control arm. The ball joint is correctly installed when there is no gap between the ball joint and the lower control arm. Do not apply excessive force against the ball joint or the lower control arm.
  3. Install a NEW seal boot by hand as far as possible on the ball joint. Installation of the seal boot is to be with the shield positioned as shown.

CAUTION: Do not use an arbor press to install the sealing boot on the ball joint. Damage to the sealing boot will occur if excessive pressure is applied to the sealing boot when it is being installed.

  1. Place Installer, Special Tool 6758 over seal boot and squarely align it with bottom edge of seal boot. Apply hand pressure to Special Tool 6758 until seal boot is pressed squarely against top surface of lower control arm.

CAUTION: A replacement ball joint is not pre-lubricated. Properly lubricate the replacement ball joint using Mopar Multi-Mile grease or an equivalent. Lubricate ball joint after seal boot is installed but prior to top of seal boot being pushed down below notch in ball joint stud. Air must vent out of the seal boot at notch when grease is pumped into ball joint, failure to do so will balloon and damage seal boot. Do not over grease the ball joint, this will prevent the seal boot from pushing down on the stud of the ball joint.

CAUTION: After the ball joint is properly greased, clip the end of the grease fleeing off below the hex. The ball joint seal boot is non-purgeable and further greasing is not required and can result in damage to the seal boot.

  1. Reinstall lower control arm on vehicle.

Ford fusion front end noise when doing tight three point turn or manovers

popping noise when turning is usually caused by worn CV joints. Inspect CV boots for tears. Torn boot will allow dust to get in and cause wear. If boot is torn, replace CV joint or entire shaft (usually easier). If boot is not torn, grab shaft next to each CV joint and see how much movement you can cause in the joint. If one CV moves more than the other three, that one is probably bad.

Ball joint boot as split will i have to replace ball joint

Hello,

If the boot is split you will have to take apart the ball joint in order to fit a new boot. It is a good time to see if there is any play in the ball joint.
If all is ok fit the new boot after greasing the joint.

99 taurus reasembling after a ball joint teardown

You wont be able to push the strut up, if the bolts are tight at the top. You need to take a long prybar and push down on the control arm to get it below the strut/spindle assy. then push the spindle rotor drive axle assembly in toward the transmission, when you get it in far enough for the ball joint to line up, ease the pressure off the prybar and allow the ball joint stud to go in the hole on the spindle.

The upper ball joints are replaceable without replacing the control arms. Use Moog K80008 ball joints and a ball joint press.

Took my car to mechanic because car was knocking ang cv boot was ripped with no ball showing. He says its not a cv joint problem but that my ball joints need replacing. Is this possible even though I...

hi there,
yes it is possible that the ball joint could be making that noise,a cv joint although does not always make a noise just becuse the boot is split.
A cv joint generaly makes a clicking sound on turns,i would maybe get a second opinion if that would make you happy.
I hope that sheds some light on the subject for you.
