Question about 1986 Porsche 944

1 Answer

Cranks over. But wont start.

I have a 1986 Porsche 944 non turbo. I have installed the new crank shaft and flywheel sensors, I replaced the fuel pump, and Checked the DME sensor. The car sat in a barn for 16 years or more. The engine cranks over easy. I am getting spark from the cap to the plug wires. I am getting fuel to the fuel rail, but it will not start. I know the basics on chevy engines, but I know nothing about these Porsche engines. What am I missing?

Pull the injectors and have them tested for electronic continuity and spray pattern as the needle may be rusted up or the coils in the injectors corroded away for the long period of no use. Regardless of what engine you have if you have spark at the correct time --compression --fuel then you must have go in the engine . Continuing to run will depend on the make and design as the other variables come into play.

Wont start

Check you can hear the fuel pump running with ignition on, remove a plug lead from the spark plugs and hold I cm away from top of spark plug with insulated pliers while someone cranks the engine there should be a clear spark between lead end and plug top, if not then most likely the ECU is faulty.

What is the before top dead centre mark for porsche 944

on the top of your crank shaft behind the small plate and your bottom of flywheel remove front cover and turn engine over and you see the diamond mark on the crank and you should see the markings on the flywheel where the crank sensors are plus the marking point on the bottom of the clutch housing if all three ar line up properly youe timing should be good plus make sure your balance shaft roller are set also?

run a fused wire from the positive side of your fuel pump to your "on" side of your ignition switch bypassing the alarm kill switch and, allowing you to drive the car

My 1986 325es cranks but won't start. I do smell fuel after about 30 seconds of cranking. This is the first time it hasn't started since it was new I have a little over 200K miles on this great car.

Here are three possible options, One you should check on the flywheel and make sure there is a tiny block of metal alongthe rim of it generally on the top but it does move, this is the Crank Sensor Pin and if it doesnt have that then theres no way its going to start, Second, you might need to replace the Speed reference sensor, Its the grey sensor on top of the block, because those combined with the crank pin wont let it start, Third along with the speed reference sensor there is a Crank Shaft sensor, the black one next to the speed reference senor, these go bad after around 150K. And another would be to check the Oxygen Sensor; another one you might want to check even though you say it cranks, is check the Ignition coil

If you have any questions email me, and I can try to help (Had these same problems with more.) The.Squall1@gmail.com
