98 avalon had run out of gas.refuled but now has no power to fuel pump harness on top of fuel tank, blue wire with black stripe, even when cranking. Relays and fuses are fine. When engine cranks, no voltage, till key is released then I get minimal voltage for a split second. I get command voltage at open circuit relay, when key is being inserted but stopped when key is bottomed out. Then again at cranking.what I am not getting is ground from the ECM, telling the relay to switch. Do I have a bad ECM or a bad IGNITION SWITCH.does the fuel pump harness need to be attached when testing like the fuel sending unit needs to talk to the computer.

Look for the emergency cut off switch ,now i know very little about the positioning of things on american vehicles ,europeon models yes but this --no so ask around or look in the book in case its listed but not always ,it should be about a inch square with a rubber top that you push down to reset .sorry but absolutly no idea where to look but under the bonnet in the engine compartment is a good place to start

No fuel. pulled off fuel line to carb and cranked engine no fuel coming out. Relay under dash working. No sound at fuel tank when key is turned on. Are there any other fuses or relay for fuel system?


Check for power output at the relay, there should be a pink wire with a black stripe that connects to the fuel pump relay, when the key is turned on it should have 12 volts for a few seconds, then drop to 0 volts. This is the prime function that builds fuel pressure before you start the engine. Even though it clicks it doesn't mean it works - the contacts could be bad. This wire continues straight back to the pump, if it has power there may be a damaged wire between the relay and the pump or a bad pump - the pump is fairly common on these vehicles.

These pumps last longer if you don't run less than 1/4 tank of fuel - keeps them cooler.

Where is the inertia switch located on a 1999 Dodge Durango


I don't believe it has one. I've heard some pretty reliable sources say this safety switch is a Ford-only product. First check the fuel pump fuse. It's fuse #1 in the Power Distribution Center, a 20 amp fuse.

If the fuel pump in the tank is not turning on to put gas up to the engine, you have a problem in the pump circuit or a bad pump.
There's an easy way to determine which it is. You will need a voltmeter or at least a test light.
Find the gas tank electrical connector. It will be near the tank. A wire loom of about 4 wires will likely come from the top of the tank and run down to an electrical connector, probably close to the side frame rails. Pull the connector apart, and on the harness side (or chassis side, not the tank side of connector) identify the dark green with black stripe wire in the connector. This is the power wire to the fuel pump. You need to check if it has voltage on it when the pump is supposed to be running and pumping.
You will need a helper to turn the key to start and crank the engine over while you check for power with the voltmeter or test light. If the voltmeter says battery voltage-right around 12 volts, 11.8 volts or more- or if the test light comes on brightly, then you know the pump has failed (90% certainty) and you need to replace it.
If there is no voltage on the dark green/ black stripe wire with the engine cranking, it is not a pump problem. You will need to consult a wiring diagram to diagnose the fuel pump circuit. I just looked and there is no inertia switch.

Replaced fuel tank and pump and now car won't start.


no engine stated.
details are based on that..
so is it still the old pump there,
this is very simple
using a volt meter. (the pump has 2 wires, measure across those)
back probe that connector to the pump. 2 pins.

12vdc cranked, if you have 12vdc cranked
but fuel pressure is 0 the pump is gone
no pump runs on 0v, or 6v, its 12vdc there,
i can not understand those fues tests
if the voltage fails to the pump it can be
the power wire or ground wire failing .
do all tests connected, or the readings will be useless.
connected is live testing, under full real conditions
and win. every time.
if ground is tested and rises to 12vdc cranked, ground is bad.
only Ohms laws here,a simple equation.

not sure why your float fails. my guess its bad.
and easy test using ohms, disconnected.
that is another problem.

ill look at your fuse, pretend V6 engine.

the service manual shows
f10 fuse is fuel pump
12vdc both side cranking is a GOOD FUSE.
note all words above.
F10 gets all power from pump relay,
so if you dont crank the relay can be off line
an F10 will be dead.
(the schematic is clear)

here is a facts on all cars, next (pure software in PCM )
  1. pump only runs 3 seconds key on, ,
  2. pump never runs, if not cranked.
  3. run cranked and all run if engine stays running.

see? and varies by year, engine, and even ECU upgrades
so a SAVVY mech always cranks to do tests.
that means its a 2 man job. sorry but that is a reality of working any car until you learn what yours does.
warning have a care here that changes rule 1 to 2, below 20F out door temps, (fun no?)

recap
crank and measure like this.
the pump has 2 wires, red hot, black ground
meter across, pins 1 to2, red back is 12vdc cranked
meter black tests lead (volts) to body perfect metal ground
and meter red lead to pin1 red shows, 12vdc cranked
12vdc means 10 to 12vdc cranked, (battery does that)
then move red test lead to pin 2, black
cranked, 0v, if see 1 volt or ore the ground called.B26 is bad.
if the pump has 12vdc on it, you hear it,
do not run it dry its fuel cooled and fuel lubricated or you wreck it.
if it is heard to run you then see fuel spec fuel pressures.
or its bad. (30psi?)

It should be four wires. Gray is power to the pump, Purple is gauge control, and two black wires that are ground. You should have battery voltage on the gray for 3 sec. after the key is turned on. Did you replace the plug-in to the pump when you replaced the pump? The pumps usually come with new plugs

No power to the fuel pump


Once you check the fuel inertia switch in the passenger's side kick panel, next is to check the fuel pump fuse, engine compartment fuse # 10.

If this checks OK ( power on both sides ), you can pull the fuel pump relay, and jumper it.

The engine compartment fuse panel is where the fuel pump relay is located at ( relay # 301 ). Pull the fuse pump relay out of the socket, and using the diagram below, with the red line, momentarily jumper the Normally open contacts, you shoud hear the fuel pump run. ( mind the pin orientation when doing this ) :

I had a bad fuel pump relay on my 2001 F-150 @ ~ 36K miles. Replaced with the trailer tow battery charge relay ( relay #302 next to it ) and it worked again.
The symptom I had was a crank no start ( theft light on dash went out ).

If the fuel pump does not run, and power is on pin #30 in the relay socket, next is to check the output of the fuel inertia switch in the passenger side kick panel. The output of this is the Pink w/ Black stripe wire. The connector to the fuel pump inertia switch should be a 2 pin connector, the other color in the connector is Dark green w/ Yellow stripe wire ( that is from the pin #87 in the relay socket in the engine compartment ).

If that circuit has power at the passenger side kick panel, next is to check for power at the fuel pump at the fuel tank. The fuel pump motor is the same Pink w/ Black stripe wire. The connector is a 4 pin connector with black ( ground for the fuel pump ) black w/ orange stripe ( ground for the fuel level ) and yellow w/ white stripe ( to the instrument cluster for the fuel gauge ).
When testing by the fuel tank, make sure you have a good ground for the meter ( extension from neg on the battery or trailer tow adapter ) as that could also be a problem under the truck.

Where are the cam sensor and crank sensors located on my car?


Crank Sensor: Passenger side of transmission just to right and above the differential cover. Has 3 wires:

Light Blue/Dark Blue stripe - Signal
Dark Red - 8v supply
Black/Light Blue stripe - Ground

If the car runs or cranks, you can test this sensor by first checking for power on RED wire with key ON. Should be 8-9.5 volts DC. Furthermore, connect a dwell meter to the signal wire by probing the back of the connector. Dwell reading should be 49-51%. If not, its likely bad.

If you remove the sensor, you MUST replace the paper spacer on the end of the sensor or you risk damaging the sensor or even the torque converter drive plate otherwise. Also make sure O-ring is in good shape and positioned properly.

Cam Sensor:
Facing Engine, it is on the driver side timing case housing, on top of the round part, just to the right of the fuel rail pipe where there is a capped fuel valve.

Has 3 wires:

Tan/Yellow stripe - Signal
Dark Red - 8v supply
Black/Light Blue stripe - Ground

Testing is same as for Crank Sensor.

Fuel tank wire harness


My schematic lies to me a lot but here it is: dark blue:goes to gauge, dark green with red stripe is pump power and black is ground.
Hot wire should have 12v, dark blue should have pulsing voltage and black should be absolute ground.

Fuel power problem


You most likely have the power wire rusted off at the top of the bracket for the fuel sending unit/fuel pump assembly, on the top of the fuel tank. This is a very common problem for that year vehicle; I change that item quite often. You can check for power at the wiring harness going to the fuel tank, there should be 12 VDC in the BLUE wire, when the engine is CRANKING. There will be NO power in this wire with just the key on, because, the air-flow meter air-valve needs to open (when the engine cranks, the cylinder pull this valve open, by vacuum) , and the air-flow meter then turns on the fuel pump. To change the bracket, you either need to drop the tank or remove the bed. Hope this helps, and thanks for choosing FixYa.
