Open Question

Mazda5 transmission seems to be running hard causing major car vibrations and such and it appears to have a lot of oil on the oil cooler hose as it is surely losing oil somehow as when I checked the dip stick it was literally bone dry?

Check the oil cooler, or transmission oil cooler. Check transmissin fluid check oil. If the sluge is brown suspect oil, if the sludge is pink or red suspect transmission oil cooler in radiator.

Why does my 98 dodge caravan have trouble climbing hills?


A transmission issue would give vibration tremendously during uphill. If you're not getting the vibration, or burning smell of transmission fluid, suspect clogged catalytic converters.

My auto transmission gearbox shows the correct level on the dipstick when it is cold, but no level when the engine is hot and running


Depending on the car you have, this might be normal, as usually some models require to check the oil when it's hot, but engine off, others require the engine to be running. Each manufacturer has specific conditions and though they are similar, they usually are not quite the same. So read the owners manual carefully, or call up the dealer and ask them to be sure. If your model is meant to be checked while running and shows no oil on the dipstick, then probably the tranny's oil filter is clogged and not allowing a good oil return flow. Could also be a clogged oil cooler. Either way you will need to drain the oil from the tranny to be able to examine the oil filter located inside the pan, or the oil cooler located up front near the radiator usually. Best way to test the cooler for cloggin is by shooting some compressed air into it and check if it comes out ok on the other end, or if it seems to have less pressure coming out, or even giving you a hard time to hold the hose in there while shooting air. Although be careful if doing that, cause there will still be some oil in the cooler and shooting air in there will spatter oil all over the place, so get a rag or bucket handy to collect the oil and not get it all over the walls :P

may need to go to a transmission shop and let them tell you which is which..only other way is to open a line and see which way the fluid runs..

Find transmission fluid dip stick


if you have an air to air transmission cooler check for oil marks along the entire hoses and cooler area as transmission oil when new will be hard to stop . If the cooler is in the radiator check the colour of the coolant as it may be leaking into the radiator.. Check the transmission seal at the drive shaft as if the oil is passing that seal it is picked up in the air flow and will be spread all under the car.

Changing leaking transmission lines


First up have some blanking plugs handy to put on the fittings you remove the hoses from on the tranny. Will save a lot of mess and oil There may be oil to the cooler so be prepared for a bit of a mess there. Replace the hoses ensureing the nuts are tight. Run the engine and check for low oil in the tranny as the lines will take up oil. Add oil if necessary

Leaking transmission fluid


TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKS,CAN BE FOUND AROUND PAN GASKET.CHECK PAN GASKET,IF IT LOOKS WET AND YOU SEE FLUID DRIPPING AROUND THE EDGE OF OIL PAN, REPLACE PAN GASKET, WHILE YOU REPLACING PAN GASKET REPLACE TRANSMISSION FILTER WHILE OIL PAN OFF.IF TRANSMISSION OIL PAN NOT LEAKING, CHECK TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LINES GOING INTO RADIATOR YOU WILL LOOSE A LOT OF FLUID THERE ALSO TORQUE SHAFT SEAL WILL CAUSE HEAVY FLUID LEAK WHILE ENGINE RUNNING CHECK OIL COOLER LINES AND LOOK AT THE TORQUE AREA WHILE ENGINE RUNNING YOU WILL SEE FLUID POURING WHILE ENGINE RUNNING THE OIL PUMP PRESSURE WILL PUSH FLUID OUT AT THE LEAKING AREAS.

The coolant jug has a creamy tan color fluid in it


that means trans fluid or engine oil is getting into cooant system. Not good. Either a leaky trans cooler in the radiator or a blown head gasket. Hope it's the trans cooler

How to remove a radiator from a ford taurus


Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove battery. Remove battery tray. Remove clip retaining contant control relay module and position module aside. Remove radiator cap. Raise vehicle front end as high as possible. Remove radiator splash shield. Drain radiator. Remove the radiator mounting bracket assembly. Remove lower radiator hose. Partially lower vehicle. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove radiator overflow hose. Remove upper A/C condenser core retaining bolts. Remove upper transmission oil cooler tube clips. Remove lower transmission oil cooler tube. Raise vehicle. Remove lower transmission oil cooler tube clips. Remove lower transmission oil cooler tube. Remove transmission oil cooler bracket and position transmission oil cooler aside. Remove lower A/C condenser core bolts and position A/C condenser core aside(be careful not to loosen the AC condenser lines. Remove radiator support bracket. Remove radiator out through the bottom of the vehicle.
Installation
Position radiator. Position radiator support bracket and tighten nuts. Position A/C condenser core and tighten lower A/C condenser core bolts. Position transmission oil cooler tube and install transmission oil cooler tube bracket. Install lower transmission oil cooler tube. Install lower transmission oil cooler tube clips. Install lower radiator hose. Install radiator mounting bracket assembly. Tighten bolts. Install radiator splash shield. Lower vehicle. Install upper tranmission oil cooler tube. Install upper transmission oil cooler tube clips. Install upper A/C condenser core retaining bolts. Tighten bolts. Install radiator overflow hose and tighten clamps securely. Install upper radiator hose. Position constant control relay module and clip securely. Install battery tray. Install battery. Connect battery ground cable. Fill and bleed cooling system. Start engine and inspect for leaks.

Oil lines going to radiator


There are no oil lines that go from the Oil Filter to the Radiator.

There are Transmission Fluid Oil lines that go from the Transmission to the Oil Cooler on the Radiator.  Plugging these, or not having them connected - will cause rapid transmission failure from overheating.

Lots of people even add additional tranny coolers.  Especially if they do much towing...  If the line is broken right at the radiator - it must be fixed.  If it is broken a little ways away - you can reconnect the lines using tranny fluid hoses.
