I have had two starters in the last few months, same problem. Start the car and starter runs on even after shutting ignition off. The starts fine for a bit, then it happens again. Need help.
Replace the ignition switch or disconnect the starter cable from the switch and make/fit a push button for the starter motor just like the old fashioned cars like the old mini that had a push button by the handbrake or a london bus that had one on a panel above your head
Testimonial: "Thanks Colin, I just had two new starters, a relay switch, solenoid, and a transmission put in this month. But I have had it since new and I won't let it go. Thanks again, David"
Check the battery like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.
If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
Check that the battery cable plus post, goes to the starter, Minus post to a good ground, like the engine.
If wiring is ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter.
Problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear or starting relay, Have someone bang on the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging the bendix gear..
Hope this helps.

It can be faulty starter controlling relay. If the relay gets stuck in ON position then battery will then starter will get power from battery non stop and it will not turn off. This relay is 12 $ part.the starter The starter relay (mounted on the passenger-side fender of truck) was "stuck" in the ON position.------------- But if the relay checks out ok or replacing this relay does not solve the problem then , The ignition switch is faulty/short causing this. The ignition switch,if you take the cowling off and the lower panel off, under the column you have DIRECT access to the ignition switch. sounds like to me that the ignition is bad and sticking on the start positon
SOURCE: 2004 Taurus. Will not start at intermittent
I have the same car but don't have that problem with this one however, I did with the 99 I traded for this one. I figured out that if the wheels were not left straight, any degree of angle facing either direction, would freeze something in the steering column and not allow it to start. Had it towed twice before the tech said he had the same problem in the past. Never happened after that. The prob I had with the 2004 Taurus, bought a cheap battery from wal-mart and it ran everything but my car, tech said it's probably the reason the alternator had failed. Check your brand of battery. My battery light stayed on for two months, started fine, switched the battery from the wal-mart one, light went off instantly.
