That is possible , or it could be a relief valve problem in the oil pump.

SOURCE: 2004 Grand Cherokee: oil pressure fluctuates

if you know for certain that the sending unit is correct and the guage is accurate, then yiu may have big problems.....while the engine is running open the oil filler hole.. is everything wet with oil? or does it look dry or just a little lubed? you can allways install an aftermarket oil pressure guage(crappy tire) if you get the same results with that then you may have a week oil pump....worst case scenerio... need an engine rebuild as the moter may have wear issues.does the pressure slowly drop as the motor warms up? at idle ? does it jump up when you step on the gas?

SOURCE: 2006 BMW 325i - low oil level 5 different times.

There is a lot wrong with "low oil" and low oil is not normal in a low mileage healthy engine.

The dealer is fobbing you off in the hope you will go away.

If the oil is being changed at least every 5000 miles or so there should be minimum oil depletion between changes with only very minor top up needed. Some oil consumption is normal but it should be minimal.

If the oil level is dropping to a very low level in about 4000 - 5000 miles of normal motoring you have a significant problem. The oil is either leaking out or the engine is burning excessive oil or a combination. If there is no leak through faulty seals or by other means such as oil escaping into the cooling passages of the engine, then there is excessive burning.

These engines are known for excessive oil consumption because the problem is a common one in the 06, 05, 04 and previous year builds back to about 98/99. The dealers know all about this problem - as does BMW - and they will try to fob you off until the car is out of warranty because the fix is expensive.

From what you say the problem has not been fixed on your car. Document the oil loss and insist on your warranty rights because your engine is using excessive oil and this is NOT normal in a properly functioning motor with as few miles as yours has. Make it clear to the dealer that you are well aware that excessive oil consumption is a common problem in many of the 325 petrol engines and you want it fixed under warranty.

Then sell the car as these vehicles will cost you quite a bit in repairs once out of warranty and once you clock up around 60000 miles or more. If you have an auto you can expect major problems at about 65000 miles (later if you are lucky) and replacement of the transmission will be necessary. Once you notice any significant problem with the auto transmission it is on it's way out.

Cheers
Sean

Oil pressure problem at idle , ok at light throttle

If your problem is that the oil pressure gauge shows zero or very little oil pressure, or if the warning light flashes or remains on, at idle, but pressure returns at light throttle, you need to get your engine checked. Make sure your engine has sufficient oil - reading on dip stick is in the normal range. At idle, your engine is not getting sufficient lubrication. If you have high mileage on your vehicle, the bearings (crankshaft, rod, cam) may be worn. Or you may have impending oil pump failure. Have the oil pressure checked with a direct reading gauge. If you do not get this checked and repaired as necessary, your engine may fail from the lack of lubrication.

Would a bad oil pressure switch cause an above safe oil level on the dip stick

if to much oil in vehicle --not on level ground --engine running while checking oil -or not swiping stick clean before reading it these are reasons for high reading on dip stick oil pressure sensor/switch only measures the pressure of the oil

My low oil pressure light has come on in my Ferrari 599 2008. What does this mean.

It means you have low engine oil pressure due to a failed oil pressure pump or pressure regulator which IS going to lead to engine failure very soon or you have a faulty sending unit or gauge. Do not drive it, get it towed to the dealer! Not meaning any dis respect to your self, but have you checked the oil on your dip stick? Low engine oil level will also cause this...if it's very low or not on the dip stick again do not drive it but go get oil with a friend and top it up and start your car...if the low oil pressure light goes away you got lucky, but there is the possibility you have already harmed the engine depending on how long the light has been on and you may want to see your dealer...we're not talking about a hyundai here, your engine is probably more valuable! haha

Where is the oil sensor on 1999 jetta. The light and beeping sound comes on but the oil isnt low. how much do would it cost to replace it you think.

The oil pressure switch is located on the oil filter flange for both gas and diesel engines. Incorrect oil viscosity can influence engine oil pressure. Before performing repairs, ensure that the engine has sufficient quantity of fresh oil and correct viscosity. Always check level when the engine has fully warmed up (after radiator cooling fan has operated) then check your dip stick. During high speed turning the oil in the pan sloshes to one side and starving the oil pump causing a warning indication. So check it after it has pressurized the system to get accurate reading. To much oil can cause 02 sensor malfunction so don't over fill.

You have answered your own question. You idle is too low. Check all hoses, and gaskets for leaks.

Audi 80 oil pressure light

i think from memory that the oil pressure switch is at the back of the cylinder head, if its not there it will be located just above the oil filter, these switches are very cheep to buy and can be bought from any good motor factors. You are right to suspect the switch, its the first thing to eliminate before bogging your self down with more complicated and expensive problems.
