The cams and crank are out of time...if thats the only generic DTC you pulled out of the computer. the cam and cranks are out of sync for whatever reason. could be a faulty timing chain tensioner let one of the cams or crank jump one tooth retarded. that is if the only trouble code p0017 is present. if there are more codes present than that, contact your local factory dealer. there may be a recall on the PCM programming. when they put in the updated parameters they call it a reflash.

2007 Cadillac 3.6L srx, check engi, code p00017 crank sensor - replaced, still running rough and giving me a misfire on 1,3&5. Changed plugs, still 1,3&5 misfire - 155000 miles, could it need new coil

P0017 timing chain Chevy Colorado P0017 Case Study Part 1
155,000 miles This is not a DTC for the crank sensor . This is for variable valve timing .
DTC P0017: Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation Bank 1
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The CMP actuator solenoid signal from the ECM is pulse width modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the CMP actuator solenoid duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the CMP actuator solenoid. The ECM controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid state device called a driver. The ECM compares the camshaft position or the camshaft angle, to the position of the crankshaft.

Your a little out of your league on this ! Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop !

• Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, or timing chain can cause this DTC to set.
• An actuator that is in the full advance or retard position can cause this DTC to set.
• The presence of DTCs P0008 and P0009 along with P0016, P0017, P0018, and P0019 indicates a possible condition with the primary timing chain and the alignment between both intermediate sprockets and the crankshaft. Or, the crankshaft reluctor wheel has moved and is no longer referenced to top dead center (TDC).
• Observing the desired and actual camshaft angle parameters, with a scan tool before a DTC sets, may help to isolate whether a condition is specific to one camshaft, one bank, or caused by a condition with the primary crankshaft timing.

2007chevy,hhr started missing extremely bad , then overheated when I crank the engine no compression friend of my coded 016 and 017 ? jumped time or better yet probably broken chain ! Any ideas ?

DTC P0017: Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation
DTC P0016: Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Intake Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation
Pull the valve cover off then turn engine by hand , socket on crank pulley an 1/2 breaker bar . Or you will be able to pull the chain up , if broken . Or even better yet pull the oil cap an spin engine , does the cam move .

2002 VOLVO S80 T6 CODE P0017

the word correlation means relationship between two or more items . In this case it means that when the crank shaft sensor is triggered then the camshaft sensor has to be in agreement that the position of the piston and valves is in the right position to allow spark and fuel.. there are air gaps between each sensor and the rotor that triggers them and if this is not correct or there is dirt in the air gap ( the sensors may be a bit advanced or retarded in the fitment holes) then this relationship of positions is being interfered with and so you get the fault code. If after rechecking the fitment of the sensors and using a scanner to put the engine light off ,you still have a problem ,I would suggest that you find an accredited shop the does a lot of work on your make of car to assist with the fault.

Code P0017 on engine

Trouble Code: P0017

Crankshaft Position (CKP)-Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation

Possible Causes:

Important: The scan tool control of the CMP actuator solenoid is inhibited when DTC P0017 sets. The following conditions may cause this DTC to set:

An improperly torqued crankshaft balancer.A mis-built or mis-timed engine.A loose or missing crankshaft balancer bolt. The CMP actuator solenoid stuck open. The CMP actuator stuck in a position other than 0 degrees.

What do P0016 and P0017 codes mean on a 2010 Equinox?

P0016 is the crankshaft position (CKP) to intake camshaft position correlation; P0017 is the exhaust camshaft position correlation.

P0016 sets when 'The ECM detects 8 of the last 10 cam sensor pulses occur during the incorrect crankshaft position."
P0017 sets when 'The ECM detects 25 out of the last 35 cam revolutions occur with 2 cam sensor pulses outside the CKP window."

Basically, you're getting pulses when they shouldn't happen, from both cam sensors, or the CKP is generating incorrect window info. Since the CKP is the common element, it's probably the culprit.

The cam position sensors are at the back of the head, one on each side corner. The CKP is under the oil filter housing, above the starter. To replace the CKP, you're supposed to remove the intake manifold and starter.

Jaguar xj 40 sovereign 1994 error code 17

I'm not a Jag expert, but error code 17 is:
P0017 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)
Additional infomation on and cause and possible solutions are here:
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0016
Basically, it looks like you have timing issue. Could be the cam or crank sensor or the timing belt.
The P0017 code would imply that you have at least two cam sensors (V6 or V8). The computer thinks that the B sensor cam is out of time with the other cam and the crankshaft. Depending on the cost and location, you might try changing the cam sensor first. The cost to check or replace the timing belt is probably going to be painful.

Engine Light on and P0017 Code displays on Computer

The cam sensor is out of correlation with the crankshaft. Check both the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor on vehicle. Also check the wiring to each sensor for broken or damage wires. Hope this will help you.
