I have a 1998 Chevy Suburban and I can get the brake lights to work. Here's what I've tried so far: 1. I changed out the bulb circuit boards, I've replaced the brake light switch, I've attempted to check out the wiring in the rear. The 3rd light works but the 2 panel lights don't
Check for power and ground at the two panel lights. GM uses a cheep circuit board design, they overheat and corrode on the other side of the board. not serviceable.
Did you probe the plugs and had power and ground but when you plugged it in then there wasnt power or ground, you retested at the socket where the bulb plugs in?
The brake light and turn signal are on the same circuit. For the wires, (L/S) black=ground, yellow=stop/turn, brown=marker, and light green=b/u. The (R/S) is the same except dark green=stop/turn.
No, if it had to do with the turn signal switch the brake lights would still come on at all three points.
Yes, fattoy is right. There are contacts in the turn signal switch for the brake light.

corngold:
I installed 2 new circuit boards and still no brake lights!!
No, I haven't done that. I will disassembly them tomorrow and check for power and a ground. Which one of the socket pins will have power when the brakes are applied?
Could this issue have anything to do with the Turn Signal Switch?
Thanks Redbeard00, here's what I've done:
I install a power plug on the the trailer hitch connection, the right and left turn signal lights work, the tail lights work, but the left and right combination(brake lights) didn't work so I surmised that there was no power at the rear of the vehicle. I do have power at the 3rd brake light(on top of the vehicle) this tells me that the brake light switch is working. The only other thing that some one aluded to was that maybe the turnlight switch is bad because the hazard lights don't work and because the brake lights are in the same circuit with the hazard and turn signals!!! Your thoughts-corngold

redbeard00, I found this response while googling for this same problem and this is exactly what was wrong. So it is actually the turn light switch as "fattoy" indicated below
Your brake lights and hazard lights go through your turn signal. Is what happens sometimes is the contacts on the hazard light switch
get dirty, therefore no electricity passes through it. Sometimes if you push your hazard switch on and off several times, like 10, real fast that will clean the contacts enough and the lights will work again. Sometimes if you tweak that switch to the sides a little or twist it a little, and I do mean a little if you use a lot of force you will break it, that might work. If any of these work then you know you have to replace the turn signal switch, which is also called a multifunction switch
