Hi I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner and I've been having this engine problem. I recently replaced the tranny (3.0 engine v6 automatic). I got it from an uncle that had it sitting in the garage for like 2 years. It's been sitting like that because he didn't want to replace the tranny. So we replaced and well now it's the engine. It always does this. When we start it up when it's cold, it idles fine. But once it warms up, it idles kind of rough. We replaced spark plugs and wires already. And also when we put it in drive or neutral I feel the transmission kind of jump. I'm not sure but I'm thinking it can be the iac valve? Or the timing on it is off. Please feel free to contact me or help me. Thanks!

Torque converter i would start with 2 years is a long time the jump ive experienced and this is a simple fix 10-40 dollar tranny sensors
when the sensors go bad they give a bucking sensation check transfilter for metal shavings your engine should be fine as you stated it sat for 2 years
warner mystery oil and a couple quicker tune up oil changes give that a shot
your engine has to work its self back make sure no oil mixing in with water from radiator this can give a jump if too much fluid in engine seals do go bad from sitting

Okay thanks. What can be with the rough idle though? Can it be that it has alot of carbon build up? Or some sensor that went bad because of the long sitting?

Hey guys, so I found out it was out of time and the timing belt was loose so that's why it wouldn't turn on. Do you think valves were damaged? Because when I attempted to turn it on, it sometimes almost turned on but then it made a little but not loud explosion sound inside the engine. Can I replace the belt and time it without worrying for internal engine damage?thanks

SOURCE: 2001 v6 escape rough idle when cold

To update my earlier repair on the 2001 6 cyl Escape: When cold, and when the ignition was turned over but no accelerator pressure given, the rough idle finally returned the P0303 code again when the check engine light came on indicating that it wasn't caused by the plugs or the coil. FYI, I had replaced the intake manifold gaskets during the original repair and just prior to that I had replaced the fuel filter which was very dirty (I cut it open to see).

The repair manual referred to fuel injectors as a possible problem. I have run three tanks of fuel using different injector cleaning products and am very pleased with the results. Cold starts are much smoother and I am unable to coax out the P0303 code or any other code.

My opinion, change the fuel filter, use a fuel injector cleaner for a couple of tanks, change the plugs if the problem still exists. The coils were not the problem on my vehicle.

Silly question: Have you checked the transmission fluid level, and is it to manufacturer's spec?

SOURCE: hello. my 2000 4runner v6 has been running rough.

Change your oxygen sensors - they're responsible for feedback that the computer uses to determine the air/fuel mixture. They usually are good for about 60k miles and then start to go downhill. When they get to a point that the computer won't trust them, it ignores them and runs on preprogrammed fuel maps that run excessively rich (too much fuel) to safeguard the engine. You've probably seen a decrease in fuel mileage as well. And the O2 sensors have to be up around 900 degrees before they'll work - the car ignores them until then. That's why you run fine after a cold start but run rough once the car is warmed up.

The O2 sensors you want to change are in the exhaust system between the engine and catalytic converters (the "pre-cat" sensors). There are O2 sensors after the cats as well, but those are used comparatively to determine how well the cats are functioning. The primaries are the ones used for fuel mixture. If it's been this way for a few weeks or so, I'd put new spark plugs in as well - rich fuel conditions can foul them and contribute to the rough running.

1990 4Runner v6/aut, 4x4. Turns over but won't start. Seems like it's not getting fuel

Spray some either into the intake while someone is cranking the engine. If it starts temporary and then quits, it is definitely a fuel problem. Check your fuel pump.

How do i replace the left passenger door lock actuator on my 2006 4Runner? Is there a manual or video or step by step guide? Thank you, Jason

There are repair manuals by Toyota which are very well done.

Call: Toyota Service Publications: (800)622-2033

Item P/N Price

Vol. 1 (Diagnostic & Troubleshooting) RM1001U1 $103.13

Vol. 2 (Engine, Body & Chassis) RM1001U2 $103.13

Electrical Manual EWD514U $67.50

V6 Supplement RM1034 $8?.??

If you've got the V6 you need the "V6 Supplement" which is eighty something dollars more.

Interestingly, the owners manual (that covers both the V6 & V8) says nothing about the Electrical manual but does point out the V6 supplement (without mentioning that it's a V6 supplent only).

What to change in a tune up for a 1990 toyota 4runner

The 1990 had points still or did it have the electronic ignition? There are only a few things to change on the electronic ignition. First the plugs have to go, get some Titanium tips in there, good for 100,000 miles, then some plug wires if you think it needs them, air filter, check all the fluids, coolant, brakes, power steering, battery water, tranny, if it has a dist with points, get a new cap and rotor and a set of points, gap them exactly to spec, or it won't run. run a can of stp through the fuel tank and clean out the injectors, or carb, the oil change doesn't come with a tune up, it comes automatically with the 3 to 5 thousand mile interval.

For a V6 # Liter engine, you will use a galon and almost half (that is about 6 Liters of oil). I use a Toyota camry V6 3 Liter engine that shares the same engine with the Toyota 4Runner.
