Sometimes the small rubber stopper that pushes the switch will wear out and fall out causing the switch to indicate on.
Under the dashboard, way up where you can't see it, is a switch that controls those brake lights.
It is made of plastic, and can break, or can fall out of it's holder.
If either of those happens, the brake lights will l stay on, because the plunger on the switch is extended, just like when you push the brake pedal.
You'll need to have the switch replaced, or the holder repaired so this does not happen again.
Brake lights staying on can (1) run the battery down, and (2) melt your red brake light covers.
Be blessed.
