Gear shifting problem. We canged the clutch,

I have a 1997 Golf GTi MK3 with a problem gear shifting. its almost impossible to get the car in ger when the engine is on and worse off when the car is not moving. We have replace a number of things that include a new clutch, rods, thrust bearing, and even taken the gearbox to be checked for any problem. The specialists said they fixed something but there isnt really much change. I own one the same year and had problems getting in 1st and reverse gears, had to go into 2nd first then through into 1st, took it to my local garage and remedied it by adjusting the gear linkage cables cost 70 quid and well worth it. Hope this helps.

Well if the clutch is fine and your box is fine.. then its most likely your gear linkage.. these are adjustable... the linkages are also very bad for siezing up...

1998 VW Golf with a manual transmission. It is popping out of reverse and also, while shifting through the gears it is really hesitant to get going in each gear. Seems to be most noticable in first gear...

I had the same problem when I bought my GTI a few years back. It turned out that the reverse gear was shot which resulted in a new transmission. It kinda sounds like you may be in the same boat.

Problems with gear box

Hi

If the clutch feels ok and isn't biting right at the bottom or right at the top then it sounds like its time for a recon or 2nd hand gearbox to be fitted.

I recently fitted a 2nd gearbox to a seat ibiza GTi which actually has the 2.0 Golf engine fitted to it and it wasn't too bad at all, but it is adviseable to fit a clutch kit whilst the box is off.

Very best regards

Geordie
