Bmw316i 1997 car is over heting

make sure your engine cooling fan is working, check to see if your thermostat is staying closed and not allowing circulation in your engine, do this by squeezing the radiator hose when the car is hot, if it is hard to squeeze the thermostat is most likely the issue

On top of your radiator,there is a small black screw.

When filling water in the radiator, you should make sure to take off the screw, and keep filling and filling water until the water comes out from this hole. While you keep filling water and the water going out from there, you should put back the screw and close it tight.

Often people don't do that!! so what happens if you don't ?

Well there is also air going inside the engine with the water you filled. And because the air inside gets also heated but not cooled like the water, the engine goes hot.
