Transmission Floor Shift Control Indicator Lamp Replacement

Remove the front floor console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement.
Rotate the floor shift control indicator lamp socket (2). Pull the socket from the trim bezel.
Remove the bulb from the socket.

Front Floor Console Replacement

Preliminary Procedures
Remove the rear floor console. Refer to Rear Floor Console Replacement.
Remove the instrument panel lower trim plate. Refer to Instrument Panel Lower Trim Plate Replacement.
Set the parking brake, then shift the transmission into drive and push the shift indicator down until it locks, to allow clearance to remove the console.

Tighten
2 N·m (18 lb in)

Find the fuse for it And replace it

Check the reverse light switch! Located under the gear shift gaiter.

Try to start in neutral. If it starts, replace the neutral safety switch. Under the vehicle, on the drivers side, mounted to the transmission, under the shifter cable. It needs replaced anyway because the same switch gives the signal for the shift indicator.

The gear shift indicator is just a peace of plastic it could be broken or just come lose. I think that car has gear shift on the floor. Normally are screws on the side of the plastic cover on each side. Just remove the screws and lift the cover and you should be able to see if the pointer broken or just needs adjusting. You should not have to try on it. just remember that it is just plastic. good luck Jerry

When that light is on, you should stop at an autoparts chain store and have them read the trouble codes. You could have a shift solenoid that is sticking or you may be low on ATF.

I uually shift into 2nd at around 10 mph 3rd at 25 4th at 33ish and 5th at 40. I get 30 mpg on a 2006 Aveo which only has a 27 mpg rating for my car. The high way is a totally different story. I dont look for gas mileage for quickness. But If you want the recomened shift points look in your manual. I learned the early shifting tric from my 01 focus. It had a shifting light. I got 33 intown mpg with that one

the light indicates that the trans is in limp mode. should be checked.

needs a vehicle speed sensor, its on the trans. if the engine was just put in( within like 2 or 3 days, not weeks) then it may have been busted in the engine swap. hope this helps and good luck
