    - The car acts like it is cutting out (3000+ RPM, driving)

    - Tires are not spinning (doing 40 mph, 2nd or 3rd gear)

    - It could be injection system cutting out, or EGR/ polution control?

    - No oil pressure guage, does have traction control

    - Did check for vacumn leaks, might be head gasket leak?

    - Idles clean and smooth through 2000 RPM

Does this pontiac have traction control? Are the tires spinning a bit, and you are just not noticing? Does the oil pressure guage drop when this occurs or just prior? Does it happen only when the fuel tank is less than 1/4 full?

Have you checked the engine for vacume leaks or advanced timing or even sticking accelorator cable or linkage? these are always a good place to start for excess acceleration

  • Anonymous May 02, 2009

next sugestion compresion check and also check valves (where is your timeing set at?is it mixing any fluids if so i would say you might be on the right track sugesting or questioning head gasket also check and make sure you dont have exhaust obstruction you know the old potato in the tail pipe trick or a rusty stuck heatriser on the manifold.faulty distributor.or cap plugged fuel filter? does it back fire ? if so is it from the exhaust or the fuel system could be buterfly action in fuel system is it carborator or fuel injection? keep me posted we will keep trying, how many miles are on the engine? have you put a timing light on it and watched to see if the timing changes with the changes in rpms? Cutting out at 3500 rpm

Check if the air filter is clogged with oil and dirt. Check the timing, then check that the cam belt has not slipped. Could be plug wires, but this will usually cause rough running as well. Could be low fuel pressure.

I just bought a 2001 pontiac grand am se with 99890 miles. I would like to know what rpm is the proper shift point from first to second gear? Mine shifts at like 3000 to 3500 rpm and shifts firmly is that...

Hello, well at what rpm it shifts at of course depends on how hard your pressing the accelerator at that moment,if you floor the accelerator it will shift at higher rpm (red line) but if you take off very slowly it should shift at a much lower rpm....but to answer your question 3000-3500 is a good shifting rpm( if the gauge red lines at 6000-6500 rpm) and firm shifting is a good thing, slow, sluggish and hesitant shifting is a sign of bad things to come from a tranny!! ps keep the engine oil,and transmission oil changed for long life out of your car engine and tranny. good luck and enjoy your new car......yz-maniac.

When bought engine idled @ 800 rpm when warm, now engine lite is on and engine idles rough @ 500 to 600 RPM. Replaced rack and pinion, power steering, checked wires, replaced sparkplugs, # 1 plug was in...

could be numerous reasons. this is your best bet take it in to a mechanic and have your engine codes scanned. it is a minimal charge, some even do it for nothing it only takes 10 minutes.this will point you in the right direction.

DON'T KNOW THAT THE CAUSE IS BUT 900 RPM IS WAY TOO HIGH FOR A NORMAL IDLE SPEED.
WHILE IT IDLING HOSE THE ENGINE WITH A MIST OF WATER AND LISTEN FOR A CHANGE IN IDLE SPEED OR AN ELECTRICAL SHORTING SOUND.
SHORTING SOUND = PLUG WIRES
SPEED CHANGE = A VACUME LEAK.

Start with changing the fuel filter...it might be plugged. Also you might want to run some throttle body cleaner from general motors. It comes in an spray can and it is squirted into the throttle body intake while reving the engine to clean out the throttle body system of carbon. And after that run a full tank of gas with fuel injection system cleaner in it. If that does not work then pull those spark plugs and check for gap and wear. Also check the plug wires...if they are old then replace them.

Hesitation and slight rpm drop at idle and while driving.

it is possible there is a soft vacuum line. try looking behind the maf sensor [attached to the air filter box] on the right side near the plenom next to a blue connector. it's a small piece of hose that is looped from one vacuum circuit to another. I have found them to get very soft and **** air.

200 Pontiac Grand Am over 3500 RPM loss of power

on almost all gm cars after 96 the engines were governed to not free rev over 4000rpm. when in gear and power braking the rpms stay lower cause of the load on engine. when reving above 3500 rpms the computer cuts back the timing and fuel to reduce engine damage if left to free rev. hop that helps.
