Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Rotate the auto tensioner clockwise to release tension, then remove the drive belt.

To install:
  1. Install drive belt (A). Route the belt over the components in the following order: Crankshaft pulley - A/C pulley - idler pulley - generator pulley - water pump pulley - P/S pump pulley - tensioner pulley.
  2. Rotate auto tensioner arm in the counter-clockwise moving auto tensioner pulley bolt with wrench.
  3. After putting belt on auto tensioner pulley, release the auto tensioner pulley slowly.

Im trying to put my timing belt back on but i dont know wer the tensioner is to lossen it

Do you mean timing belt or serpentine drive belt (the one that runs the accesories on the front of the motor)? In either case, please re-comment on this stating which belt you mean and what make / model / year / engine size your vehicle is. Thanks, Mike

Are the timing belt and the serpentine belt the same thing?

No. The timing belt is a toothed belt that drives the camshaft via sprockets on the camshaft and crankshaft; and it is located behind the timing cover and not visible until the cover is removed. The serpentine belt is a long ribbed belt that drives the accessories on the engine, e.g.: the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor etc. It is in the open and visible.

Can i adjust accesory belt tension without a guage?

Serpentine belts?....yes. Absolutely. Timing belts...no. Drive belts should be tight, but not too tight. If too tight, it could cause noise because of the pressure put on the affected pulley bearings. Too loose can cause poor charging of the alternator, lose of power steering when the wheel is cut to much either way, or squeeling.

When is the suggested replacement for timing belt on 2001 Chev Impala? Is the timing belt also the serpentine belt?

the recommended replacement is usually 60 k however i think that belt can go to 100.000 miles, i would not recommend that, because todays driving conditions, the serp belt is a separate belt used to drive the accesories, i.e alt, power steering, a/c and should also be replaced ,however that type of belt can last up to 60.k
