Consider the dimmer switch on the steering wheel; the wires from it wouldn't affect the tail lights, but could possibly affect the headlights. Hopefully loose wires from the assy is the problem.. replacing the unit might be difficult. or expensive.

First, check for output voltage at the headlight switch when the switch is turned on. If you do not get output voltage at the switch, replace the switch, and you'll be good. Otherwise, read on.
A common problem with those GMC and Chevy trucks is that they used too small of a gauge for the headlight wiring under the dashboard. You will need to use a voltmeter to check all points of the headlight wiring from the switch to the headlights to determine where the voltage is lost, and will very likely need to replace some wiring. PLEASE BE SURE YOU USE HEAVIER GAUGE WIRE THAN WAS USED BY THE FACTORY, so that you can avoid having to re-do the work in the future.

The ground wire to that headlamp is broken or weak use a VOM to determin the ground and run a wire from a metal sourse to the headlamp it should work properly

Have you hooked up a preesure gauge, if youre priming it by turning the key a few times i would say you have a fuel pump thats low on pressure and probably should be replaced.

At Auto Zone or any other large auto parts store like Parts Source will have the Headlight Retainer clip's and springs that hold the headlight housing to the body.
Good luck and hope this helps and when you replace the old ones if there still there, put some grease on them so they don't rust. If you need instructions, they should have the step by step to install and aime the headlight.

check the headlight switch for burned contacts or a heat dis-colored connector to it. If u find either replace the headlight switch and the connector as a pair.

is the water light showing if it is either you cooling pipe is got a leek or the water pump is nackerd and needing renewed

I would still have the alternator chk. sounds to me that the internal regulator or a diod is going bad.
