check the Fuses.

This may be happening because the rubber stops on the boot are obstructing the catch from engaging, or the lock may need to be repaired or replaced.
A possible fix is to remove the rubbers, spray WD-40 on the lock and the tailgate portion to remove any rust that keeps the lock from functioning.
If that doesnt solve the problem, there is a slight chance that you have faulty wiring that is keeping the boot open - it would be best to get it checked by an expert.
