Transmission problem and backfiring

I have a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 350 5.7 Vortech. I just changed the transmission fluid and filter on it and now it won't shift past 2nd gear, I double checked and it has the correct fluid in it and it ran fine before this. Also now I am having a backfire I changed the spark plugs today and it is no better. Also I noticed today that there’s a light ticking sound coming from what sounds like the transmission, it is not coming from the motor I have checked the oil and listened to it several times. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

These trucks have whats called a lock out trans. in them. this is a very common problem with them. Do to a bad speed sensor or bad dash cluster. One way to check the speed sensor is to simply unplug the plug located near the rear of the trans. if that doesnt help I would take it to someone that could run a diagnostic check on the cluster. I know that sounds bad. But these things can get expensive quick. 9 out of 10 times its the speed sensor. I hope this helps you and good luck.

1996 gmc sierra transmission

Could need new filter, cheap but p.i.t.a. and if it doesn't work you just put new filter in dying transmission. Could also be over or underfilled or as my dad found out, bugs like transmission fluid as a place to go die in and got stuck in a passageway. Sometimes you get away with using high mileage fluid, sometimes not.

1997 gmc sierra Z71 not going in to revers and whines in park and neutral

Check your transmission fluid while the truck is on, and top it off with some new fluid and a filter. If this doesn't work, it may be time for a transmission rebuild.

The transmission is shifting hard going from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd on my 1998 GMC sierra 1500 4x4 5.7 liter. This does not happen until about 15 to 20 minutes of driving. Before that the...

rec check fluid first. If trans fluid hasn't been changed in last 30,000 miles change fluid, filter and pan gasket. At that time inspect for foreign materials in bottom of pan or on magnet if you have one. If truck has over 100K and fluid was never changed you may have more problems if changing the fluid.

How do i change the tranmission fluid on a 1997 gmc sierra 1500

You have to drop the transmission oil pan to change the oil, while you are changing the oil the filter is also replaced too.

Transmission wont shift into any forward gears or reverse gear on my 1996 gmc sierra 1500 4wd

4WD! the transfer case is not stuck in neutral is it? Fluid levels are good? Have you noticed a decrease in mileage or power prior to this problem? If no then time to take it in for service it sounds like. Transmission fluid is not consummed, so if it leaked out then you may be able to fill it up and get the leak fixed, if too late then its a rebuild on the tranny.

I have a 1992 GMC Sierra with a 5.7 motor. When

It sounds to me like your transmission is not well. It's working when the fluid is cold but not as it warms up. Pull the dipstick and check your transmission fluid for color and smell. It should be pinkish and smell like oil. My guess is that it will be closer to brown than pink and have a burnt oil smell to it. It the transmission is full, check the level with the trans warm, engine running, in neutral.I'd be shopping for another transmission. If the fluid is below the add mark, you an usually buy yourself some time on the replacement by changing the trans fluid and filter. At the same time add a transmission treatment with the new oil,I've had good luck with Lucas. Hope this helps.
