First check fuel and spark. If you now its getting fuel then verify that it has spark. the more info tou can give the better.

    Oh, Well when I hear that It sounds like you have a bad head-gasket(antifreeze into the cylinder/s) your doing it a little out of order. check/inspect the plugs first. Also check the oil(pull the dip stick) see if there is sludge. If you dont own a spark tester then pull a spark plug out snap it back into the spark plug wire and ground the spark-plug to a metal part of the engine. wear thick insulated gloves, if the wires are in poor condition and/or the plug isnt properly grounded. You may get an electric jolt. someone needs to hold the plug and look for a blue ark at the electrode while someone else turns the engine over.IM curiuos what you find, good luck.

Why does my 1997 grand Cherokee 318 have extreme extended crank after hot shut down, why does it always start great cold.

TRY THIS:
When starting the engine HOT, instead of moving the key directly to START, pause for the COUNT OF TEN at "ON," then (after the count of ten), engage the starter.
If the car starts more quickly when you do that, there are a couple of possibilities:
  1. Idle bypass valve is becoming sluggish, and/or your oxygen sensors need a moment to react (aging vehicle)
  2. Your fuel pressure regulator is not operating properly, bleeding pressure when the fuel pump is not running;
  3. One of your fuel injectors is not closing entirely, slowly leaking fuel into one of the cylinders and bleeding pressure from the fuel rail.
Most likely, 1 or 2, possibly 3 or a combination of the above.

If waiting for a count of ten does not help, it is possible that your engine temperature sensor has failed, and is engaging the cold start circuit, causing the mixture to be too rich when starting the engine hot.

Ran out of gas now wont start

Turn the key untill all of the lights on the dash light up but dont start, then turn off. repeat this about 4 or 5 times. this will prime the fuel rail. if that doesnt work i would suggest getting under the hood and bleeding the air from the fuel rail. on the rail there should be a cap, take that off and use like a pen or your finger to push that like needle in there until fuel comes out. if all else fails it maybe a fuel pump.

The first thing i would check is the fuel system hook a fuel pressure gauge up to the fuel rail and check the fuel pressure, after you have verified the fuel pressure is good let the gauge sit and monitor how much "bleed down" occurs if the bleed down is out of spec i would bet the fuel pressure regulator is bad or theres a leaking fuel injector causing fuel to drip into 1 or more of the cylinders causing a rich condition at startup.

Does the engine turn over good? If so you may want to have the crank shaft position sensor checked out. Also check for fuel making it to the engine. You should have a fuel rail which is chrome looking that runs on top of the engine. Look along the rail for a valve stem that looks like what is on you wheels. You may have a cap on it, but either way press the stem and see if gas squirts out, if not you're not getting gas up to the rail.

Car wont start

THere is no gas in the fuel rail at the time gas is running out. WHen you fill the tank, it needs to pump for a while so fuel can fill up the rail then the Fuel distributor so it can build up pressure for the injectors to work properly. It need to continue cranking at least 2 minutes. However you don't want to run out the battery, so can just turn on the key to hear the sound of the fuel pump stops, then turn key off turn key on again. Repeat this for 6 times then start the engine. The reason for it is that every time the key is on it turns on the fuel pump to prime the line then turns pump off after a specific time, then it turns on again only when key is at ignition position. By doing this you help to pump gas into the fuel rail instead of the starter continue cranking draining down battery fast. Cheers.
