03 Mountaineer AWD Premier V8 rattling noise under vehicle

Ford told me it was torque converter. Replaced, still same noise. Then catalytic converter, then flywheel. Still makes the same noise. Finally someone said it was a loose heat shield, but they can't get to it to fix. How would you fix a loosed heat shield. thanks

thanks, we'll try it and let you know if that fixes the problem.

If its the heat shield against the underside.its install with fender style aluminum rivets( if you do it be very careful not to drill into a harness) If its the heat shield around the CAT then you should replace the cat. You can try to repair it with a pair of long hose clamps but I don't advise removing it. In the wrong environment the heat could cause a grass fire. or ignite trash that may get caught or blown underneath. Good luck.

Sounds like a rattle under the van when stopped or idleing

It is most likely an exhaust heat shield or a catalytic converter that is breaing apart inside. Get underthe van when it has cooled off and "thump" the exhaust with your fist to see if you can locate the rattle. Often, the heat shield welds break where they are attached to the catalytic converter. I have fixed many of them by taking 2 or 3 large screw-type hose clamps and screwing them together to make them long enough to reach all the way around the catalytic converter and tighten them down to stop the rattle. If the noise sounds like it is coming from INSIDE the converter, you will have to replace the catalyst. (or ignore the noise)

Rattling of catalytic converter heat shield

If it is the heat shield , any muffler shop can put a couple of welds on it. Could also be that the cat converter is destroyed inside with pieces of it ratling around. In that cast a new cat is the only answer.

Rattle under my 03 expo

your converter has broke down inside this will effect gas millage and could clog up the exhaust and kill your performance.
