Can you see the cooling fans come on? When the engine gets to 212 degrees the fans should come on. To test the fans, with the engine running turn the A/C on high, the fans should come on .
The system also has a 212 switch that screws into the intake manifold. This is what turns on the fans with no A/C.
I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: Transmission dipstick fix?

You can get one from a dealer for big $$ or just go to any scrapyard and get one there, really cheap!!! (make sure the trans it came from is a match to yours)

2007 Jeep Commander won't turn over. Ran it earlier today no problems. The "TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP" indicator comes up. Sounds like it wants to start but just won't. Also have a water leak...

There's always the possibility that the water managed to get into the ECU and fry the system, but I'd hope fervently not. Pull the dipstick. If the fluid looks black, or is shiny, you might be in for a bad day. Drain the transmission oil out if it is black (a $10 fluid vacuum pump from Wal*Mart works wonders here), and pour in the right amount of ATF fluid. It might be that it burnt the fluid so much it changed viscosities, trying to crank the engine and the car forwards? I wouldn't know, but see if that helps.

My jeep grand cherokee started overheating at idle

try the water pump - first - make sure the radiator is really full - take the cap off cold and fill - if it looks full - start and run 8 minutes or so - then fill it up - look at ur fan belt - is it tight - tight is about how much pressure u use to make a firm hand shake with little movement - any movement over about an inch is loose - when the jeep warms up the belt can slip and not even make a noise - - new materials don't always squeal. - then be sure ur water pump is ok - they go slowing - the fins wear down - one more thing is the radiator - u don't say how many miles or what maintenance schedules you have or not so that's it for now

Overdrive cuts off buy itself while driving

when the transmission overheat light (this is for the fluid) comes on the transmission control module pulls the trans out of OD to try and cool it down, this is called failure mode strategy, it is built into the programming of the control module, the signal from the trans is most likely incorrect, but the module doesn't know that, replace the transmission fluid temperature sensor.
