- both parts in the distributor were changed,i do not remember the names of the parts but both were changed.Apr 27, 2009
- the truck was running but not running good before the problem started. it was idling very rough and i was trying to figure out why when all of a sudden the truck stalled and would not start again.
nothing was touched when the truck stalled.Apr 27, 2009
- also i am cofused about the coil screws you mention. there are no screws that hold the coil in place there is a special type of fastner that hols it in placeApr 27, 2009
- the control module was changed a while back because the truck was not running right. the truck still ran lousy after changing it. the pick up coil was changed after the truck stalled and would not start.Apr 27, 2009
- the pick up coil is in the distributor, you have to pull the distributor out and remove the shaft to change it.Apr 27, 2009
- i connected a timing light to the number one plug wire and turned the engine over, the light never blinked which i assumed meant there was no spark, how else can you tell?Apr 27, 2009
- the coil is in cap if i am understanding you correctly, the coil is inside of the distributor which is why the distribetor has to be removed and the shaft pulled out to replace, please tell me how to check for 12volt at the coil?Apr 27, 2009
- i apologize for the misunderstanding, the coil is mounted on the outside of distributor. i did replace the pin in the gear on distributor,
i did not check to make sure the distributor was turning with the cap off, i do know that the gear did engage when i put the distributor back in. i will check for 12 volt and also check with cap off to make sure shaft is spinning. i appreciate all your help.i am at work now and the truck is at home so i cannot answer you until i get home tonite.the only part that has not been changed is the esc, (electric spark control) i am waiting for that to come in today, do you think that part would cause this problem?Apr 28, 2009
- well i got the truck running, but it is running rough,i beleive the problem was the coil. i am now playing with the idle air control valve, i notice you can adjust it by turning the screw in or out, but i am not sure if it is working, can you tell me if that part is sdjustable or not? it is a new part that i put in.
Clarification Request

Could be esc...and there is no external test for it. so put itin and see what happens.

No...we are going astray here...The coil is the ignition coil. Is it inside the cap or mounted outside the distributor. We already established that you have changed the pickup coil under the mount plate for the module...correct? The 12v should be at the terminal marked batt on the cap. (unless the coil is not in the cap. Also...you did put the pin back through the distributor drive gear right? And the distributor does turn smoothly when the engine is cranked? (rotor) (look at it with cap removed when cranking)

Is coil in cap or external???? is there 12v at the coil????
You can check spark by removing plug wire from plug and sticking a screw or other small metal item into the end and then holding the wire, (not close to the end) place the metal thing near the block or other ground and cranking it over. Spark should be able to jump 1/4 inch or better gap.

You also mentioned that it does not seem to get spark....did you check at the plug wires and see if there is/isn't spark?

Is your coil in the cap or external?

So you did not change anything after the engine stalled. The changes were made before the engine stalled? Did you have the dist out and take it apart as I mentioned? This is important for me to know...I wasn't there watching. You need to answer everything I ask...otherwise the mental picture I have of your problem is missing important pieces.

OK then you changed the control module and the pickup coil (removed the distributor, took the shaft out and installed same)
You have 12V at the battery terminal on the cap connection.
Did you check to make sure that the coil screws did not go through the cap into the inside? If they do, (and it does happen), spark will go directly to ground and not out the wires

There are two parts in the distributor housing. What did you change?
