Two potential failures come to mind for this issue; a dirty cabin filter or a fuel system leak. Cabin filters catch debris that is suspended in the air before it comes out of the vents. These contaminants build up on the surface of the filter and can produce a foul odor and reduce airflow. If this is the case, the cabin filter simply needs to be replaced in order to resolve the problem. A fuel system leak is another possibility but is a much more serious issue. Fuel that escapes the system will evaporate into the air which can then be drawn into the A/C system via the fresh air intake (located beneath the cowl area, close the the windshield wipers). Although this would cause a foul odor in the cabin, the bigger problem is that flammable liquid is close to a heat source (exhaust) under the hood which is a recipe for disaster. Because this is a potential safety issue, I'd recommend having a trained mechanic inspect for a fuel leak and repair as necessary. by the gas pedal to the right, youll need to pull carpet back. here's a step by step with pictures http://www.clublexus.com/forums/es300-and-es330/168680-es300-a-c-or-cabin-filter-change-97-01-a.html
The intake air filter is located under the hood on the right side ( a black tube leading to a black box which the filter is in). the cabin air filter is behind the glove compartment, just unscrew the one screw on the right of the glove compartment which holds the linkage and remove the two black tabs on each side of the inside of the glove compartment, to do this simply turn and pull each tab ( a little plier may be useful because they may be kinda tight). the glove compartment should now fall freely. behind it is a white tray which holds the air filter, simply pull it out and clean it or replace it, HINT...the funky smell that comes out of your air vents is usually caused by a dirty cabin air filter
If the air conditioner emits a foul odor into the cabin it is probably the drain tube on the evaporator core is clogged. What happens is the clog causes mildew to start growing and then it blows the stink right into the car. And to answer your question the cabin air filter location all depends on the year make and model of the car.
I just changed the cabin filter of my ES300. I found the instructions on the manual, under airconditioning and audio. It's pretty easy to do. I bought the filter from Kragen's for $21.95.
(cabin filter solution) Their is an cabin airfiliter behind the glove compartment (2004 mazda mpv) which is very easy to take off. Replace the airfilter or clean it with soap and water. Open the glove box and on the bottom left had side of the glove box if you apply enough presure on it by pulling it out towards you and slightly down it should pop off. The right side should slide out immediately following the left side pop. All it is, is a fork like claw holding on to a bar. On the ride side is a bar sliding into a hole. That should do the trick. After the first time its a sinch.
