Sounds like a bad main fuse a bad battery or a current draw from another circuit

Ok lets see
The charge ligth or sistem is operating properly ligth, or not
1) check for pwer, in the Alternator positive terminal, shoul be power all time ingnition Off or On dont matter
2) Check for ingnition controled power in the another wires that going to the other connector in the alternator, beside the + batery

If do you find power in both test you should take the alternator to the autoparts store to be cheked, but if any of those test fail, check you wiring harness, the

First check alt At The Back of Alt Big Red Wire Were hooks to Post (stud) Do you have voltage ?? How Much??
What Voltage do you have at same Place with Engine Running ??
Now At wires Were they plug into Alt ,Top. Wires in White Plastic Clip, Do You Have Powe With Key On ?? How Much Voltage??
Jump across the 2 in the clip (with Engine Running)ONLY TEMPORARY!! Do You Have Voltage at Battery ?? How Much??
If Over 13volts With Clip On (Jumped) You Need A Internal Voltage Regulator ..
Is Batt Light On on Dash ??? Theres A Lot Of Testing You Can Do !!! And I will Need More Infomation to Keep Going ... These are just some Possible Problems No Way In Depth ...
Could Be a Number of things Or May be Just as Simple As a Blown Fuse, Dirty Batt Cables ETC etc etc I Hope It Puts You On The Right track !!!!!!!!!!

clean battery terminals ,bring battery to be tested after charging, after reinstalling battery run car and test alternator output it should be a minimum of 13-14volts if it is under 13 replace alternator , use a voltmeter set on 12 volt 10 amp dc to check the wire to check is located on the back of the alternator covered with a rubber grommet of course hold negative wirw on volt meter to ground and touch red wire to big terminal on back of alternator while car is running should have 14 volts or at least 13 volts

SOURCE: replaced alternator and battery is good but not charging

I found the problem YEAH. It was the fuse that is in the side of the fuse box under the hood, Its where the battery wire from the alternator connects thru a fuse to go to the battery, Its one hundred and something volt fuse. It took care of the problem instantly.... Thank you all for your replies...

SOURCE: will not charge

What year is this mark vll?On the back of the alternator look for 12 volts on the large connector out put, with the engine off.If there is not 12 volts at that connector, run a new wire,as big ,or larger than the one on it,and go to the positive side of the battery, this will fix it.If there is 12 volts there, check it with the engine running, and see if 13.65 to 14.25 volts is thereat the large connector on the back of the alternator.Check the voltage regulator, see if there is 12 volts on one wire, with key off,and 12 volts on another one, only with key on,if there is,then replace the voltage regulator,it is a defect.

You may have a short somewhere or something wired incorrectly that's maintaining a constant draw on the battery even with the car off. Try disconnecting the battery with the car running. If it dies, you have an alternator problem. Could be a fusible link in alternator wiring.

Replaced the alternator and battery in 97 subaru. Still wont hold a charge any suggestions

Here's a test you can try. With the car running in idle, disconnect the negative side of the battery. Does the car still run? If it does, then the alternator is good. What's the voltage reading? If the car should die, then there is a problem with the alternator or the voltage regulator or some wiring associated with the charging circuit. Good luck.

My reverse drains my battery way down and doesn't have a lot of power anymore I replaced the battery and the same thing is still happening? Could there be a short somewhere?

Hi. Why you think it is reverse? If you sure your battery is good, first thing you check after is alternator. Test it. Could be shorted to ground or not charging properly. If it's ok, use drop voltage test to determine which circuit is at fault. Would be to much to write so go to website: Fluke. com for awesome info how to test for voltage drop and other tests.

That's a pretty serious short to ground.
Go back and closely look over the waterpump install and see if you pinched a wire somewhere.
It good policy to check the last thing you did just before the problem occurred.

Overcharging

I'm going to assume your meter is accurate and you have verified the 18.4 reading.
Something has to be bypassing the regulator to make the alternator charge at full power. The regulator breaks the circuit dozens of times per minute to maintain 14 volts. Does the alternator charge with the regulator unplugged ?

Charging system wont charge. i put a new alternator on and its still not working. thinking a bad wire some where or something but not sure

Check/test all charging system components. Have battery tested; check cables for good connection and corrosion; check belt for looseness or cracks; even if you just bought a new alternator, it could still be bad. There are alot of shops and parts stores that will check your charging system for free.
If it's discharging when vehicle is just sitting, probably a bad ground or loose wire somewhere.

WONT START

Sounds like your alternator has gone bad.  The alternator is responsible for charging your battery back up for you as you drive.  You can have this tested if you take it off and take it down to your local auto parts store.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for rating my respones and for using FixYa!

New blower motor but still doesnt blow and battey is dying???

There are three main possibilities:
One is that your battery might not be making a good connection somewhere, like a bad ground or corrosion at one the cable ends, positive or negative. A bad connection will prevent the battery from ever charging fully.
Also make sure no connections are loose.

Another possibility is that you may have a light or other accessory stuck "on" after you leave the car, like a trunk light, etc.

The third possibility is that there is a short somewhere in the electrical system, in the form of a bare wire or malfunction of some accessory which is draining the battery. Sometimes this can be very difficult or time consuming for us non-mechanics to figure out.

If you still have trouble after the battery and connections check out okay, it's probably a good idea to have a mechanic isolate the problem.
On a side note, Caddies have a lot of power accessories so it's good to take them for a good highway drive once in a while to let the alternator fully maintain the battery. Use a battery charger to charge if the battery is really low. The alternator is really used for maintaining a charge, not charging. Using the alternator repeatedly for heavy charging will eventually cause your alternator (expensive) to overheat and fail prematurely.
You may want to check the output of the alternator with a voltage meter. While running, the voltage at the battery should be about 13 -14.7 volts. While the car is off, the battery should be about 12.6 volts but no lower than 12. This may vary a little with the outdoor temperature.
Make sure the water level in the battery is correct -- always use protective eye wear and use extreme caution any time you work around a battery.
A good local mechanic won't charge much to do a basic check up of your charging system and this might be well worth it. He can also verify in fact if the battery is being discharged and how much.
If there is a short somewhere, he is probably your best choice for diagnosing and fixing that.
