I don't think running out of fuel would put on the engine light. How about your oil level?

Did the security light show up on the dash when you turn your key forward to start?

Yes do that tranny fluid shoud be changed at 30-40 thounsand mile if not the tranny will go bad.and you might have it starting now. if the fluid isnt chery red and you should be able to see through it on your finger if its clean,if dark red or brown red its burnt and has bad smell.

alternator is going be the problem, when that stoped working the car was running off the battery when that died your car cut off.

check the engine breather pipes and all the vacumn pipes for deterioration

the transmission sensors(in or out)went bad .i had the same problem.change the two in and out sensors on the tranny then take the battery terminal off for ten seconds and it will reset your computer and take off engine check lite. ps the sensors are under your air box.

Remove the oil cap and have somone crank the engine. See if the valves are moving, if not, you have a broken timing belt.

Depending on how much gas was in the tank and how steep the hill was, the fuel pump most likely started pumping air instead of gas, thereby stalling the engine.
