Replaced the fuel filter lately?

Tune up?

Air filter?

How often do you change the oil? If only by factory guidlines you may have worn the engine out, smoke / knocking / pinging is a good indicator of this condition.

When Driving my 96 Mercury Sable, the RPM needle races and the car slows down. When I take my foot off the accelrator it will kick into gear and drive.

Check the ****** fluid level hot, if it is ok you will need to have the transmission removed and rebuilt.
