SOURCE: Runs rough when low on fuel

It could be a very not noticeable leak in the fuel line or the fuel pump could be picking up trash. Also your gas tank makes a small amount of condensation which may be picked up through the pump which could choke out the motor of gas. The best thing to do is to take all of the gas out of the tank and check for rust if its a metal gas tank. Also if there is water from the condensation in the gas, I would not run the gas that you take out of it.

Hello,

I read your problem complete, and understand this is frustrating. From what I can tell by your description is a few things that can cause this. If you run the gas down to low lots of problems can cause things to go wrong more than people think. I always myself and tell others always if possible to never run gas lower than quarter of a tank if possible. What happens, especially on older model cars, they will pick of years of junk in the bottom of the fuel tank and it will partially clog fuel filter or of course make your fuel injectors partially clogged, WHICH would for sure cause all your symptoms described, chugging at low rmp and speeds, all most dieing, and even cause some over heating issues as car is working to hard. Solution to this of course is, most any shop can clean your injectors, they hook it up,and run a injector cleaner direct through the line. ( not the junk you add to fuel tank to clean injectors, most of that stuff just a rip off) And the fuel filter almost any oil change place, or same garage that cleans your injectors can replace fuel filter.

Next thing and most likely final thing that would cause this based on your description of the symptoms is 02 sensor. Which is part of your emissions. Most cars have up to 4 sensors. The one I believe that could cause this, is the one nearest your Cadillac converter. Again, places like AUTO ZONE, can check your sensors with there hand held computer and see if there is a faulty one, as well as most garages of course can do this.

In conclusion: You can do this yourself, but because of your symptoms and if you don't want to play the game of find and replace, then it is best to take it to a reputable garage (not dealer, to expensive) and have them replace fuel filter, which is never a waist of money, and clean injectors which is always good to have done, as better performance and fuel mileage, and then have them CHECK, with computer the 02 sensors, to see if one is not working or acting up. I believe this is where your problem lies, only other place could be would be fuel pump itself, but i think that would be last case scenario, if others don't fix problem. And fuel pumps can be expensive and hard to get to on a lot of models. so try what i suggested first as I believe that is the area of problem.

Thanks so much, Mike from Fixya,

GMC envoy after I filled gas tank the low fuel light came on and as I was driving it would go off than come back on after a few miles the check engine light come on stayed on and the low fuel light still...

You will need to replace the fuel level sensor which is in the fuel tank. They have a lot of problems because the metal fingers on the sensor wear off and gives you the incorrect readings. This will also cause the check engine light to come on.You will probably have a level sensor code. This will be a lot easier if the fuel level is down to about a quarter tank or less. Also you should be able to get just the level sensor and not have to get the complete fuel pump module.Good luck.

My 02 3.8 windstar starts chugging down at redlights. i have changed the idle air control, the plenum gasket, and the egr valve

Chugging down? Do you mean your engine is almost stalling? Sounds like your fuel filter is clogging up. Change it before your fuel pump dies. A Fuel Filter's like $10 - $15.
