How to change the fuel pump

You have to empty the fuel tank somehow (siphon the gasoline out into a fuel can so it doesn't sit around and cause fumes to concentrate where they could be ignited). Jack the rear axle of the car up and put it on jack stands for safety. Disconnect the filler line and fuel lines that go toward the front of the car from the fuel tank, unbolt the 2 straps holding the fuel tank, lower the fuel tank (take care not to damage any of the lines or hoses as it comes down, take off the locking ring, remove the fuel fuel sending assembly, disassemble it, then reassemble with the new fuel pump, place the assembly back into the tank and put the locking ring back on, then put the fuel tank back in, reconnect the fuel lines, fill the tank with just a few gallons, test to see if it starts, take it off jack stands. My aux tank valve will not change from front to back, fuses are good , switch works good . engine stalls when I move dash switch from rear tank to front. but if I flip back real quick, it gets fuel and is...

Check your fuel pump in the front tank. The fact that it begins to stall - tells me that the valve is actually working - the front fuel pump just isn't pump fuel.

Can you give me instructions on how to change a 1987 sedan deville fuel pump?

In-Tank Fuel Pumps
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, open the fuel tank filler door and disconnect the sending unit feed wire. Release the fuel pressure.
  2. Siphon the fuel from the fuel tank. If the rear of the car is raised one foot higher than the front, more fuel can be taken out.
  3. Raise the rear of the car and remove the screw securing the ground wire to the cross member.
  4. Disconnect the fuel line, evaporative emission lines and the fuel return lines at the front of the tank.
  5. Support the tank with a jack and wooden block and remove one screw on each side securing the fuel tank support straps to the body at the front of the tank.
  6. Lower the jack and tank enough so that the fuel pump electrical lead can be disconnected. Disconnect the wire.
  7. Remove the fuel tank from the car.
  8. Remove the locknuts securing the fuel gauge tank unit and fuel pump feed wires to the tank unit.
  9. Turn the cam locking ring counterclockwise with a soft non-ferrous punch and hammer. When the lock ring is disengaged, remove it and lift the gauge/pump unit from the tank.
  10. Install in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the fuel tank retaining strap screws to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

I have a 87 mustang and it has a mr gasket electric fuel pump. It vapor locks all the time. i have to take fuel line off turn switch on let fuel pick back up then plug the fuel line back up and it will...

Actually vapor lock refers to a condition in the intake manifold on a carbureted engine. You don't have vapor lock. What you may have is a filter inside the tank, its nicknamed a sock. Its a fine mesh screen and may be plugging up. When you pull the fuel line the fuel flows back and unblocks a small section , until it starts too **** again and re plugs. You may also have fuel pump that starts to lose power when its gets hot. Lee
