Unfortunately you will need to heat the bolts as much as possible then try releasing them
then keep running them back and forth up and down the threads getting a bit further off each time you will obviously have to replace rubber bushes when removed cos of heat

SOURCE: Rear end noise from front wheel drive car

At that mileage it could be, and most likely is given your description of the noise. I assume it reduces in volume as you slow down. If you can find a quite piece of road drive up to where the noise is apparent and lightly swerve from left to right. (Don't roll the car!! ) If the noise reduces as you swerve left then its the left bearing. If its when you swerve right that the noise reduces its the right bearing. If its both the only way is to jack the rear up and spin the wheels as fast as you can and listen. If there's a hint of a rumble from it, its that bearing or both. It should be completely quite apart from the slight hiss as the shoes rub on the drum.
35K may not seem much but if you don't know the history of the car it could have hit a bad pot hole or even had a knock on a kerb.
I have replaced bearing with a lot less miles than yours.

You will need to remove the differential rear cover,drain fluid, remove wheel, brake drum, (rotor) . Unbolt center diff. pin, carefully remove (don't loose shims) push axle in remove lock keeper, then slide out axle, replace seal, put some grease on it, slide axle in reverse all to install.

i'm assuming you don't have a hubshark,this is a tool that will alllow you to remove the bearing while the knuckle is attached to the car,you may be able to rent this tool at a auto prts store .if not you need to remove the entie knuckle,first remove the trailing arm bolt,then the lateral link bolt{long and stubborn bolt},disassemble the brake shoes and parking brake cable,abs sensor if equipped the knuckle to strut bolt{no marking necessary they are not eccentric} then you need a to use or borrow a press to remove hub and bearings good luck

1989 Subaru GL Wagon, told I need both axels replaced and ball joints as well as brakes replaced, for $500.00. Is that too much?


That whole deals sounds fishy. Brake job should be about $100 depending on parts. That part about needing to replace axle to replace ball joints doesn't sound right. I've been a diesel mechanic for 30 yrs and bought, drove and fixed used cars a bunch. Not that specific one, but plenty of them. Get another opinion.

easiest way to tell if it is 2 wheel or 4 wheel is look under the car. From the front of the vehicle just off center (could be left or right) there will be a differential. (much like what you see under the rear of a pickup truck. If you see this it's a 4wd or awd. The difference between awd and 4wd is- 4wd is either front or rear wheel drive with the ability to (now days) push a button and "lock in" the other axel. Awd is at all times, all 4 wheels are working together to move the vehicle.

I have a 1988 Subaru L Series Touring Wagon with a busted CV Joint, i have the new part but not sure how to fix.........Is it a difficult job? Do you know where i could find a free guides or directions on...


If you are replacing the CV joint itself, you have spent too much money for one, and are in for more work than needed. I own a 1993 Subaru Loyale Wagon, front wheel drive (converting to four). I had to replace both sides when I got it, and it is so much easier to replace the drive axles rather than the CV joint. I suggest returning the part, and purchasing the entire drive axle. The drive axle will require the same steps : Remove brake system, knock out pin in drive axle near tranny, and pull the drive axle out. Insert new drive axle, replace pin (if new one is not provide, this is okay.) and re-assemble brake system.
If this is not feasable for you to do, and replacing the CV joint is your only option, then go to the the auto parts store and ask for a CHILTONS manual for your car.

How do you make 1992 legacy rear wheel drive


There is a fuse holder in the engine compartment. If you install a fuse in it it will make it front wheel drive but not rear wheel drive.

My daughters 1988 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon needs the rear driveline replaced...how difficult is that to do at home.


At 21 years old it is important to look at the value of the vehicle and the ability to acquire used parts. If you are replacing the rear end you may be looking at big money if you had to tap the new market ..it could be terribly expensive. Look at things like body rust and engine health before diving into a major expense.

No, the front end has CV joints that allow the wheels to turn sideways, while the rear wheels run straight.

the rear wheel bearings are sealed units, that are pressed on the axel. you must have a press to get them off or on.

Subaru cv axle noise?


Do you know if this car has ever been recked? if your going thru that many axels makes me think something is not running true, a wheel bearing would not make a cv joint in a axel go bad. Did you replace the axels? or did you have them done at a shop, and did you see the old axels after they were replaced. You got bigger problems than a wheel bearing. From what i can gather some thing is bent or your getting bunch of bad axels witch i dought.

Subaru legacy wagon


This problem is usually caused when the transfer solenoid/valve assembly goes bad, it's located in the transmission extension housing & needs to be replaced. it can be done without removing the transmission.
