SOURCE: Can't get my 2000 ford taurus out of park

The gear selector is locked until the system detects the brake pedal is being pressed, the brake circuit then sends a signal to the shifter release solenoid to pull a pin back and let you shift out of park, this is a safety feature required by federal law, U need to have someone see if the brake lights go on when you press the pedal, if they don't check the switch at the top of the brake pedal, if the brake lights work then the little solenoid is defective.

When you turn ignition on it releases a cable that is attached to the shifter also the shifter has a solenoid attached to it that is released when you step on the brake. Both times that I had the problem of button stuck and cant shift out of park the solenoid was sticking and wouldnt release .

Gear shift stuck

There is a switch behind the brake pedal that tells the transmission brake that the brake is applied and allows you to put the car in Park. For some reason the signal from the switch isn't being sent. It could be a bad switch (most likely) or a bad connection from somewhere leading to the switch. Check your fuses (although it's probably not a fuse) and see if you can get someone to scan your OBC with a VAG-COM to see if there are any errors reported in the system. Most Autoshops, the dealer will scan for a fee, you you can buy a VAG-COM here http://www.ross-tech.com or you can go to an autoparts store like Auto Zone- sometimes they will scan it for free.

Good luck!

Definitely mechanical. The grinding noise when put into park suggests that you have a bad final drive part. Are both front axles still bolted to their yokes? There's a really common issue with axles in VW/Audi cars.

It sounds like your transmission needs a rebuild. It could also be a loose linkage, or low transmission fluid. Check both of those first.
