Lubricate the shifter cable or replace. P1705 can be generated when the transmission is "in-between" selections.

SOURCE: have a 1998 4runner. automatic.

Check the brake lights when the the problem occurs, the system has an electric interlock that dis-engages a lock-out pin and allows you to come out of park only when the brake light circuit is active and it gets a 12 volt signal from the brake light switch, other issues are the solenoid that pulls the pin back and the cable and linkage sticking, pull the cover off the linkage and make sure everything works freely.

That code is for the evaporative emmisions system. Here is a link to an open forum you can go to, this will help you understand what it is, and why. The vehicle on the site is a van, but the code, and parts involved are one in the same, so don't worry about the difference in vehicle. The van is a toyota, and this is the information on the p0446 code. Hope this helps you.

My battery is dead and I can't move the car due to the auto gear shift stuck in park. How do I move the car to get a jump on the battery?

if you look on the center council where the shift lever is you will see a small plastic button on the drivers. Remove the button. Insert a small screwdriver into the hole and push down. You will then be able to move the shift lever into nuetral and push the car.

My 1997 grand marquic will not go into park, im mechanic enclined, is there something I can do w the linkage

Most likely, either the shift tube is damaged/broken or the screws have backed out of the lever at the end of the shift tube that the shift cable connects to. If the shift lever feels really "floppy", then you probably have a broken shift tube. You will probably have to pull the steering column down to get a good look at the shift tube and see how much play is in the shift tube bushings, check the shift tube to see if it is broken and see if the lever at the end of the shift tube is loose (shift cable lever).
A little word of caution: If you take the steering column down, be sure to disconnect the shift indicator cable first so it does not get broken. There is a tiny screw in the plastic braket that must be removed then the cable loop will simply slip off of the nipple on the shift tube arm.

Anyway, you will need a T-30 torx bit to work on the shift tube, the shift tube bushings and the lever at the end of the shift tube.

I made you a graphic below to help you understand what I am saying. Please note that it is NOT necessary to remove the steering wheel to do this, but you will need to remove the upper steering column shrouds if the shift tube bushings are loose.

There is a switch called the neutral lockout switch that has probably failed and needs to be replaced. This switch keeps you from being able to start the car in park. Try putting the transmission in neutral and see if it will start.

I have '98 Polo that has been laid up for 6months.

Brakes wont rust over in 6 months. Sounds like the parking brake is stuck. Check the parking brake lever for slop and free play. If it goes up and down with no force the release catch is stuck. Use a flathead screw driver and manually trip the release. Hope this helps.
