Check the fan relay by switching another one in its place. If this solves the problem. Replace relay.

VW Jetta fan, wipers, headlights work until engine starts. Then they do not always function.

I would suspect you have a defective ignition starter switch, this is the main switch the the ignition key cylinder operates and it powers up the while electrical system,. It is under the steering column covers.

Why doesnt the cooling fan come on on my 1993 mercury topaz

You just asked about the one circuit that gives this backyard mechanic nightmares(lol).There is a relay to turn fan on, but whether it is controlled by a simple temperature sensor/switch on the engine, or by your ecu (engine's computer) I don't know.
Until you get a definitive answer from one of our experts here, there is a simple test you can do to make sure fan motor is good. Unplug the connector for motor and check for corrosion in the terminals of the connector. Plug it back in. Look on the thermostat housing or just adjacent to it, for a single wire connector. This is the fan sensor/switch. Unplug it and turn key to on. Fan should start. Be careful of fan blades when key is on: It MAY come on any time key is on. If it doen't come on it may be a bad sensor in the switch-supposed to build resistance as coolant temp. increases, then at certain temp. will turn fan on.
So, fan on? Replace that switch you disconnected. Or, still no fan? Plug sensor back in. Turn key off. Unplug the fan motor again, and use jumper wires from battery to fan terminal connector, just long enough to verify if fan works or not. If fan motor is good, there is a problem with the temp. sensor, or the relay (probably located in fuse box by battery), or the associated wiring, or the computer (IF your fan is controlled by the computer). Then you have just inherited my nightmare. But if fan does not work, you have found the problem. Good luck.

The electric fan that cools my radiator is not running.

The radiator fan should come on when car reaches normal operating temp,With engine at Idle and temp normal feel the top radiator Hose ,it should be hot,If no then Engine coolant is not moving-cause could be an "Air lock" if that is the case,turn key off until it cools then disconnect top Hose and start engine,at normal temp,you should have Engine Coolant coming out,turn key off let engine cool;reconnect and refill with a 50/50 mix;

Back to the Fan problem;the Fan should come on when engine temp is normal,if not turn the Air-Conditioner on,radiator Fan should come on at any temp;two checks ,one is the Fan Relay ,located in the under Hood main power supply box;There will be 3 or 4 relays for different systems since they are of the same part number swap and see if problem is fixed;if no check the Fuse in same power supply box;You said fans spin so they are not locked up;Take an eight dollar D.C. circuit tester,they look like an ice pick with a clamp for ground attach,to ground and with the fan plug disconnected see if you have voltage; ,You can have a continuous fan by finding a wire close to the fan that has power when the key is in the on position,take a wire and attach to that wire;

I have a Prelude '97. It overheats. I replaced the readiator, water pump, and one of the fans, but it still overheats when going uphill or when in slow traffic. I've noticed that the fan that is...

will try to help. the fan you replaced, was it the air conditioner fan? if so. then you need to check your primary fan. the one that does come on when the engine reaches operating temperature. make sure by starting engine, let the motor run and the temperature guage reaches the normal operating temperature.if the main engine cooling fan does'nt come on, then you'll need to check the fuse box under the hood. relays are black square plug in's they are marked and will[fan relays] tick when you turn the key on] if main engine fan does not come on when engine overheats, #1 fuse blown #2 relay bad #3 main cooling engine fan bad. note; the air conditioning fan will come on with engine running,when air conditioniing is turned on. when the a/c is turned off, the a/c fan will not be turning. hope this helps and as always, thank you for choosing fixya.com

check to see if the fan comes on if not there is a thermostatic switch that controls electric fan that is not working.

Cooling fans

Sometimes the thermostat gets sticky and starts opening more slowly and in acting like that the engine gets hotter. Does it come on at all but seems pretty hot when it does?
Its becoming good weather now so let me tell you how to set the fan so it runs all the time when the key is on. It will not hurt the motor but insure it stays cooler until you can locate the problem.
On the inside side of the fan you will see wires coming out of the motor. Turn your key in the on position while you do this. Be sure to keep your shirt tail and other objects out of the way of the fan. Take a wire that heads up to the engine area. It will come to a spot where you can unplug that wire. Do so and the fan should come on. if not then plug that wire back in and trace the next one up and unplug it. The fan should come on. Do this until you find the correct wire and the fan comes on. Then turn the key off to make sure the fan goes off. If it does not go off you need a different wire yet. I seem to recall there is only two or three wires at most coming out of the fan motor so it will not take you long.
I would then consider replacing the thermostat so you can get it back to the correct position. If you need help doing that then let me know, Good Luck, The Raz
