Question about 1996 Suzuki Sidekick

1 Answer

(1996 suzuki sidekick 1.8L)How do you remove the Kick-down cable on the transmission without dropping the transmission? I can see the end of the cable but don't have enough room to see to figure how to disconnect it. The manual said to pry it loose with a screw driver but there must be a bolt or something holding it, shouldn't there????? Once I figure out how to disconnect it I don't know if there is enough room to get to it.

Fun , huh? 4speed, tranny, A/T .
the A/T fix, may be in the 96 body FSM , TV cable. pg 7-18 -20
its all there, every step, and its not pretty , at step 8 on.
http://www.acksfaq.com/96-FSM-v1-7A-pdf.htm

my first thought? jack under tranny , and drop crossmember to get access. (can be done minutes with impact gun.)

SOURCE: suzuki sidekick clutch problem

Check the cable clearance. Too much clearance will cause clutch slippage or total clutch disengagement. Adjust the cable so that the clutch pedal will be hard to press by hand .5 to .75 inch from its initial point.

SOURCE: suzuki vitara kick down cable

From memory, the tranmission pan will have to be removed. This is messy, and care has to be taken to avoid contamination entering the trans. The cable has probably rusted from off-road use in water and now gear changes are very harsh and sudden.

1996 Suzuki sidekick 1.8L engine

The 1.8 is a J18 engine. On all Suzuki J engines, the crank position sensor is under the flywheel/flex plate. Yes, that will require pulling the engine or transmission. BUT the electrical connector to it is under the intake above the starter. So you can troubleshoot the system without pulling the motor. :) With this engine, the crank sensor is only used for miss-fire detection but will throw a code if bad.

1996 suzuki sidekick has a dash light "power" that is on and I have no idea what it means. I checked the power steering fluid and it is good.

There should be a power/normal switch on the console just to the right of the automatic transmission gear selector. (Labeled A/T on my '96, but "power" in my '92.) This switch changes the shift profile of the 4 speed automatic transmission.

How to get sidekick speedometer cable off?

at the instrument panel end or the other end? at the instrument panel end its either a knurled nut which must be twisted off (unthreaded) or a retaining latch which must be depressed. if you feel behind the gauge and you don't feel a knurled nut then you probably have the latch. feel for the end of the cable then press down on the latch and press in on the cable and then the cable should pull right out. at the transmission end it's a knurled knob, unless it's 4wd then it's on the transfer case but it's still a knurled knob. hope that helps.
