Question about 2000 GMC New Sierra 1500

1 Answer

After travelling a rugged road, i smelled gasoline. Looked under the truck and found fueld tank handing low with the front tank strap missing. I used a ratchet strap to raise the tank temporarily but have a leak from a charcoal colored box in front of the tank. When i'm idling it leaks alot, less so when i rev up the rpm, and after turning off the engine it stops dripping after a few minutes. What should i do?

It seems to have flooded itself. Give it time to dissipate. Should be ok. Will have to repair tank and replace charcoal canister at worst.

SOURCE: leaking coolant on the intake manifold

Easy solution; if it is just a small leak, use alumaseal or any colling system seal in the radiator. I t worked for my two cars. it even worked on a new radiator that was leaking steam from odd places.
If hoses or pipes are completeley rusted or the rubber is cracked, i would replace them.
ps also, this seal could protect the engine for a while from water getting into the cylinders if you get a small leak through the cylinder head gasket.
hope this helps.

Gasoline or exhaust fumes? If exhaust, you have a leak. If gasoline smell, tank may be over full and vent may be clogged.

"Keep-alive Memory Voltage Too Low". The computer has a little battery or capacitor to keep data in its internal memory from being lost if the vehicle battery goes dead. It's detected that the voltage at that little battery or capacitor is too low to reliably protect that data.

It has nothing to do with missing or a gasoline smell.

It may be time to find another computer for that car.

Gas smell but not any leaks

Depending on the Year of Expedition there was a recall for Gas tank straps. Those units having shields for the Off-road package kept the gas tanks from falling off the vehicle. For units without the shields, the tank could hang from the remaining strap which would put all the pressure on the remaining strap.
The repair for the strap is free under Warranty.
There are other parts which may fail. The main line to the fuel pump can rust. Any metal component up to the fuel injectors can likewise fail.
There is also a system for the Emissions and the vapors can leak if the hoses have pin holes. A device called a "smoke test machine" is needed to detect these leaks. This is a possibility since you see no fuel puddles under your vehicle.
A tiny fuel leak can seep and evaporate while the vehicle is in motion.
I would call in the vehicle VIN# and see if your particular unit has been recalled for the straps. An inspection under the vehicle would be useful. After that, do a "smoke test".

When you remove your gas cap do you have alot of pressure releasing out of you gas cap? Also do you smell it more while your running the a/c or do you smell it as if it where in the car? You might want to see if the fuel pump gasket was replaced when you had the new gas tank installed or possibly check under the hood for injectors or the pressure regulator. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Fuel smell on fill up

Look under your car for damage in front of both rear wheels. Your car has twin fuel tanks on it. Mine did this after I had a tire shop fix a flat. I should have stayed in the bay, but they don't like that, and the MORON jacked the left rear of my 04 convert in front of the wheel, on the shield that covers the fuel tank. It pushed the shield against the tank then upward against the body, and broke the plastic crossover fitting on top of the tank. I started to smell gas the next time I filled up, and when I looked under the car, I had a tiny drip. I saw the bent spot on the plate, went to my shop and put it on a lift, found the damage and had to pull the whole rear apart to drop the tank and replace the tank line. I hope nobody has done this to you ! Its a repair that is best performed by a professional shop. Too much has to be disturbed to do it.
