Poor gas mileage

I have a 99 Chysler sebring coupe. On a full tank, i avg about 120 to 170 miles. I do smell gas some times. I don't drive it far. About a 1/2 mile M-F and 20 miles on the weekends. Do you know what might be wrong or what i should be looking for?

SOURCE: poor gas mileage

I hope your friend put some gas stabilizer in the tank before he store the car.

I will put one bottle of ISO-HEET (red bottle) to the fuel tank + fill-up and let it run down to 1/3 tank.

Fuel up with a full tank Chevron gas for one more pass.

You should get 21 city / 26 highway on the PT 2.4 Liter engine.

take 2 miles off if it's an automatic.

SOURCE: gas smell inside outside the car. poor gas mileage

Check the fuel hose and clamps from the filler to the tank .check hose for cracks . The smell will probably be strongest in the boot.

What is the typical mileage per tank? Does anyone know? How can I improve the miles

car is 24mpg, city.
so 15.6 MPG sucks it does. but is possible if you let my 15yo kid drive car, it is easy, to do, fast right and heavy foot, for sure.

is that averaging 3 tanks, as that prevents ISLAND pump shut off
issues. (varies)
did you check miles with GPS, to see if your speedo/odommeter is a bit nuts?

here are the basics, i can list 100 things, but here are a few.
  1. measured wrong. not 3 times avg. (use same gas station and pump) use GPS for true miles. (then switch stations and repeat)
  2. bad driving, (teenager? in house?)
  3. stolen fuel?
  4. brakes dragging.?
  5. running 15psi in tires,? (oh'bummer said it ,!)
  6. engine running bad, driving with the CEL lamp glowing? DTCs stored, scan the PCM> look see.? fix.
  7. never ever tuned it UP, this decade?
  8. Pulling a heavy load.?
  9. measured only on the up hill run in the rocky mountains, (i just did that)
  10. transmissions slips or TCC lockup failing. (scan the PCM)
  11. not coasting down hills( cuts fuel 100%) see #2
  12. old fuel?
  13. ill stop.

Gas needle wont move

If it is showing that it is empty, the float may have sank. However, the cause could be the gauge in the dash or the sender and the sender is in the tank. It is not easy to change because you have to drop the tank. It is cheaper to replace the sender than it is to change the dash because the dash guages are all on one unit. However there are tests that can be run to see what the issue is and the tests are done using meters and jumpers etc to see if the guage responds to those. Then they know whether it is the sender or the guage.

Almost sounds like it is leaking fuel. Do you smell gas at anytime? Also do you know if the fuel gauge is reading correctly?

After getting gasoline, it increases wrong mileage with camry 2003

One tank of gas is not enough to compare mileage. Or are you saying the computer's readout of mpg estimate is showing less? Try a tank or two of premium and see if that helps. Keep track of gas mileage. Driving techniques have a lot to do with gas mileage, as does long trips vs. short trips, highway cruising vs. city driving. For best mileage, do regular maintenance and keep the car in top running condition-good spark plugs and clean filters and clean oil ! Attend to minor problems before they escalate.
If you want to check actual miles per gallon, start with a full tank. Write the odometer reading down, and go. Everytime you put gas in, write down the amount. When you are close to 1,000 miles from the time you started, go fill the tank and include that amount of gas to your previous list. Now add up all the gas used and divide it into the miles to get miles per gallon. (976 miles/31.8 gallons = 30.69 mpg ) . Only one tank will skew your numbers, might be off cause the tank was filled more to the top than the previous fill-up. About a thousand miles of driving will give you a very accurate figure of miles per gallon for your car.

My gas gague is not working. I just bought the car. I don't know how many miles per gallon my honda passport 99 V6 4x4 takes HELP

Google the models tank capacity, it is likely 15-20 gals, then do the same for the EPA and any other reputable sources, a forum etc of personal experiences too, . Fill it then go by the most conservative of estimates for mileage averages and minus 5 mpg the 1st time to be safe!, then when you have a 100 or so miles left aprox, go refill it and note usage and miles actually traveled by you. this may vary due to hwy vs city type driving and if your week to weeek habits are common or mixed up with any degree of hwy/city usage being predominate, thus affecting your numbers, after a bit you will say, 200 miles and its time or 250 miles etc, cant hurt to have a buffer, its better to keep a car filled as less condensation can occur which in empty tanks will happen more than with full tanks, it may be a fuse, worth checking, but the sending unit may be part of the fuel pump in the tank or pre pump, some cars use both setups.

Why is my 2002 Chevy Cavalier horrible on gas? I am only getting 17 miles to the gallon. I have a CNG tank but no filling station close by. Could the weight of the tank be affecting my gas mileage?

Cars are just like airplanes. Weight will always have an effect on fuel milage. Check your tire inflation. We find, in our shop , that low tire inflation in the biggest cause of poor milage. (beside a lead foot like mine)

Gas light stays on even when tank is full

the float sensor attahced to your fuel pump sounds as though it is not working properly. Usually this occurs when the car rides on E many times and becomes damaged. depending on the model it may be necessary to replaced the sensor assembly or if it is the complete unit the whole fuel pump.

Also, depending on your driving habits your car can use more gas if your are driving in traffic (stop and go). Average out your fuel mileage by filling up a few times and keeping a log of the gas consumed. Do this by reseting the trip meter when you fill up and when you fill up again divide the total mileage on your trip meter by the amount of gas you used by getting the amount of gallons it took to fill up again. ex. 360miles divided by 10gals = 36 miles per gallon.

note. make sure you check your air filter (is it clean?) and tire pressure (32psi) these can be contributing factors to poor gas mileage
