Most likely the belt tensioner pulley is worn out...(internally) and needs to be replaced...this is help on with one bolt in the middle of the pulley...be sure to align the back side of the new pulley with the slotted tip sticking out...one of the easiest to replace...about $50. for the part...inspect the new one to help familiarize yourself with how to mount it...use the end of your socket wrench to insert into the tensioner pulley to remove the serpentine belt...Hope this helps.

The pulley you are referring to probably is the idler assembly. If it is noisy, it may have to be replaced.

SOURCE: belt noise when first starting engine

Don't use a "belt dressing"...

There may be oil or other substance on the pulleys.
Remove belt and clean all pulleys .. inspect belt for contamination from those pulleys.

That should do it!

SOURCE: diagram for 1998 buick lasabre serpentine belt

I found the diagram in my owner's manual.
I replaced the belt on mine just 2 days ago. All you need to do is remove one bolt from the lower motor mount and remove the spacer. After you relieve the belt tensioner, the belt will slip right through the gap. Don't forget to support the engine before removing the bolt. As a backup I took a photo of the belt with my digital camera beforehand... just in case.

SOURCE: How do I change the serpentine belt on a 1998 Buick LeSabre, 3.8

My friend;
Try this;

  1. Check the belt pulley may have attaching tension bolts (Nuts), etc.
  2. Loose the belt pulley attaching tension bolts (Nuts), etc.
  3. Normally there are three bolts & or nuts u need to loose to allow u swivel the pulley side way.
  4. Once loose, swivel the pulley side way.
  5. Mostly, you don't have to remove the bolts & or nuts completely.
  6. You may need to remove other serpentine belt to reach the power steering belt.
  7. Removing those other belts work same as the power steering belts or other belts.

Check your belts and pulleys. Belts should not be cracked and pulleys should turn freely with no noise.

Car is leaking antifreeze and started sqeaking really loud when i started it up this morning and didnt stop. it got -8 last night just trying to catch it before bigger problems happen.

Where is it leaking antifreeze? Was it from a hose? Start car. Run to temperature. Check to see if there is smoke (steam) coming from under the hood. This would be coolant spraying out due to pressure. Shut down car and cool off. Replace hose, fill with coolant, and bleed system.

The coolant might be hitting a pulley or the pulley is now worn out. Remove the serpentine belt and start car. See if the squeek is still there.

Have loud noise from engine,gets louder w/more rpms.it is an automatic,60k miles.no exhaust or muffler problem.

Serpentine belt tightener pulley bearing was bad, made a loud noise. I replaced the pulley (jobber part) and the noise level was reduced enough to notice the waterpump was also making a noise ... more revs = louder noise. I am now replacing the water pump. (approx 60k Miles too).

remove the serpentine belt. spin all the pulleys on the system and make sure none are seizing. check for any play in the pulley bearings. if you have a stethescope, with the belt on and the car running, put the probe on all the components and listen for any abnormalities.

Super charger noisy

If the s/c is making a knocking noise that goes away when the throttle is pushed, you could have a coupling problem. Remove the s/c belt, grab the pulley and quickly twist the pulley back and forth from the 10 to 2 positions. There should not be a clunking noise and slowly moving the pulley you should feel a drag while the rotors move, no drag immediately means the coupling is bad.
