SOURCE: hi there . .

You will have to find the source of the leak and repair it. There can be no leaks of any amount, or the clutch won't work. After you repair it, whether it be a line or the slave cylinder or whatever, you will have to bleed the line and get all the air out of it. if you need more info, get back to me.

SOURCE: Freelander td4 2004, clutch pedal at rest position is too low, when you press the clutch in you don't get full travel and gears are stiff to engage.

You have a leaking master or slave hydraulic clutch cylinder. I recommend you replace both

SOURCE: trouble selecting gears when cold

Hello
The engine and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM and TCM (Power Train Control Module, Transmission Control Module). When a problem like this or other drive-ability related problems occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

Have the car scanned by a transmission shop for transmission related fault codes (not all generic scanners will read trans codes) you may have a bad solonoid in the trans valve body?

REVERSE INHIBIT
If the vehicle exceeds 6 mph (10 km/h) in the forward direction, and Reverse (R) gear is selected, the EAT ECU switches on the low clutch timing solenoid valve in the valve block, which drains the fluid from the reverse clutch.
This function prevents the gearbox from engaging reverse gear when the vehicle is moving in a forward direction, so preventing damage to the gearbox We Are Here To Help !Donald Deane MCSE,ASE,CPO

The Clutch disc and Release Bearing for the TD4-Freelander, were replaced recently. The Pressure Plate was still in a good condition.Gears difficult to engage. Please advise.Tks.John.

Most likely still has air in hydraulic clutch slave system. Many transmisions will have dificulty shifting if clutch doesn't full disengage. If air is in system it won't allow full disengage thus difficulty in shifting even possible grinding gears

Freelander clutch

check out the operation of the clutch system .IT is difficult to rationalise a hydraulic clutch because if it is slipping that means that the pressure plate is being held off and not fully engaging but it also means that when pressing on the clutch the there would be no problem changing gears . But if you have a cable clutch operation then it is possible that the cable is jamming inside the outer cover and holding the pressure plate off ( slipping) and gear problems. If it is cable then replace the cable first. If hydraulic then it may mean box out for a new clutch kit.

Have freelander td4 03 plate, continuous problem with clutch. had new clutch , slave cylinder and master 2 months ago, all fine till a month ago lost pedal completely , had new master fittted problem fixed...

Definitely a hydraulic issue. Iknow you said they were both changed, but its usually the master & slave assembly that go faulty on the Freelander. Both parts come filled with fluid and pre-bled and only require fitting, no bleeding. Check with garage to make sure they did not split / bleed them.

I have a 2002 freelander TD4 and we think the clutch has gone when u push the clutch pedal down it just stays there and wont come back up does this sound like the clutch has gone?

Sounds like a clutch control problem. Did you check the fluid in the clutch master? If you get a leak and run out of fluid this will also do this. This vehicle uses DOT 4 brake fluid in the master.

if the truck won't go into gear go to a transmission shop or a dealership if possible, and ask them to check the "shift linkage". it may be loose or even broken

The cluch pedal does not come back up at times and the following time it does not work and consequently cannot swith to a gear on my Landrover Freelander 2003, 2L. diesel. Gilbert

i would change the clutch and while you are at it i would also change the clutch arm and bush as they are prone to seizing causing a stiff clutch action and dropped peddle and slave cylinder failure , slave is plastic and the ears and white coller snap off, when cold if your car feels like its jerking as you move off i would deffently say it is the clutch arm and not the clutch, but as you will need to remove gear box any way i would renew the clutch and thrust bearing.

Probable clutch needed

If you put your car in 1'st gear, release the clutch pedal and nothing happens, absolutely the clutch is faulty.
