96 ford contour... Driving cut off won't start but anitfreeze blowing out the radiator resource cap... But engine won't start will turn over but will not start

Your problem may be a blown head gasket, cracked or even warped head. Have you noticed excessive white smoke coming from the tailpipe? Or notice a a sweet sugary type odor?

first and foremost check the fuse box. there is a fuse for guages. The temp sensor is somewhere on the manifold and it will have a hard wire with probably a spring around it for protections that runs from the engine to the instrument cluster. You can remove the temp sensor and use a heat gun or propain heat and see if you get any kind of response. I suspect if all your other gauges are working the fuse is good. Most temp sensors do not use power only for lighting of the gauge, It just sends a resistance change to the water temp bulb and it moves the gauge. Is it a seperate gauge or in your insturment cluster? could be simple as a crushed line or the sensor went bad. It is normally self contained. I suspect it is a gauge and not a dummy light? if you can not get the one working in the instrument cluster I suggest going to and autoparts store and replace it which is very easy to do. You can remove the old sensor from the block and reinstall the new on in its place and run the cable back through where the first one was and mount the gauge in another area, It is very important to know the water temp since most computers use this info for setting the correct fuel to air mixture in a closed loop system. That is a diffrent sensor but you need to know the temp yourself to keep from blowing a head gasket or worse which can cause you lots of money to repair, I prefer to mount my own gauge seperate from the cluster, best of luck

A set of spark plugs usually requires replacement after about 20,000–30,000 miles (32,000–48,000 km), depending on your style of driving. In normal operation plug gap increases about 0.001 in. (0.025mm) for every 2500 miles (4000 km). As the gap increases, the plug's voltage requirement also increases. It requires a greater voltage to jump the wider gap and about two to three times as much voltage to fire the plug at high speeds than at idle. The improved air/fuel ratio control of modern fuel injection, combined with the higher voltage output of modern ignition systems, will often allow an engine to run significantly longer on a set of standard spark plugs, but keep in mind that efficiency will drop as the gap widens (along with fuel economy and power). When you're removing spark plugs, work on one at a time. Don't start by removing the plug wires all at once, because, unless you number them, they may become mixed up. Take a minute before you begin and number the wires with tape.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If the vehicle has been run recently, allow the engine to thoroughly cool.
  3. Remove the spark plug cover(s), if equipped.
  4. On the 2.5L engine remove the ignition coil assembly from the rear valve cover. See Section 2 for the procedure. Remove the water pump pulley cover.
  5. Carefully twist the spark plug wire boot to loosen it, then pull upward and remove the boot from the plug. Be sure to pull on the boot and not on the wire, otherwise the connector located inside the boot may become separated.
  6. Using compressed air, blow any water or debris from the spark plug well to assure that no harmful contaminants are allowed to enter the combustion chamber when the spark plug is removed. If compressed air is not available, use a vacuum to clean the area. NOTE: Remove the spark plugs when the engine is cold, if possible, to prevent damage to the threads. If removal of the plugs is difficult, apply a few drops of penetrating oil or silicone spray to the area around the base of the plug, and allow it a few minutes to work.
  7. Using a spark plug socket that is equipped with a rubber insert to properly hold the plug, turn the spark plug counterclockwise to loosen and remove the spark plug from the bore. WARNING
    Be sure not to use a flexible extension on the socket. Use of a flexible extension may allow a shear force to be applied to the plug. A shear force could break the plug off in the cylinder head, leading to costly and frustrating repairs.
  8. Remove each plug and inspect the plug even if you are replacing them with new ones. An inspection can reveal a great deal of information on the overall condition of an engine. Use the condition charts in this section as a guide. To install:
  9. Inspect the spark plug boot for tears or damage. If a damaged boot is found, the spark plug wire must be replaced.
  10. Using a wire feeler gauge, check and adjust the spark plug gap. When using a gauge, the proper size should pass between the electrodes with a slight drag. The next larger size should not be able to pass while the next smaller size should pass freely.
  11. Carefully thread the plug into the bore by hand. A handy tool to use to install spark plugs are the flexible rubber installation tools that are available at most auto parts stores, in place of this tool an old plug wire boot or a piece of fuel line long enough to fit to the plug hole is a good alternative. If resistance is felt before the plug is almost completely threaded, back the plug out and begin threading again.
  12. Carefully tighten the spark plug. If the plug you are installing is equipped with a crush washer, seat the plug, then tighten about 1⁄4 turn to crush the washer. If you are installing a tapered seat plug, tighten the plug to specifications provided by the vehicle or plug manufacturer.
  13. Apply a small amount of silicone dielectric compound to the end of the spark plug lead or inside the spark plug boot to prevent sticking, then install the boot to the spark plug and push until it clicks into place. The click may be felt or heard, then gently pull back on the boot to assure proper contact.
  14. On the 2.5L engine, install the coil pack and the water pump pulley.
  15. Install the spark plug cover(s), if removed.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.

Probably a leaking head gasket, allowing pressure from a cylinder to get into the cooling system. The only cure is to replace the head gasket - radiator stop-leak compounds will NOT work!

I have a 1995 ford contour SE 5 speed. it is running hot almost red lining.no fluids are leaking, no antifreeze smell inside, windows do not fog up when heat is on but heat is blowing cold air, fans are...


Could be a thermostat problem, or potentially a blown head gasket.


if you take the oil cap off and check under neath the cap (inside of cap) if there is sludge buildup i would get the gasket checked.


Also try check in the radiator, if it looks like there is gunk or **** in the radiator it may be just enough to block the thermostat sensor. Usually if its a thermostat problem the temperature dial doesnt move.


Firstly would check for head gasket, thermostat and note how fast it heats up, when does it overheat (on idle, driving on highway, driving round town, etc)

Engine cooling fan won't come on while driving


The electric cooling fan is not needed while the car is driving down the road. Air is being forced through the radiator and provides enough air flow to cool the system properly. The only time the cooling fan is required is when the A/C is in use or the coolant system temperature has reached 225F.

I have a 96 contour, I was running rough and now


these cars are bad to blow head gaskets and i have had and lost two of them this way replaced engine in one costly but ok you have all the symptoms of blown head gasket take cap off for radiator fill make sure its full then if bubbles come up while cranking its blown to make sure then drain radiator the lack of water in it it will crank normal and possibly start which is proof positive

look under the car where the radiator is. it should be on the trans where the engine and trans meet.

Temp line comes on and stays on


If it's flashing, it can mean it's overheating. STOP DRIVING. First Check the electrical connector, if it's plugged in, it should be ok. Next, pull the return line off the overflow and start the engine (with the engine cold) and the return line should almost immediately start flowing water, if not, your water pump is broken and not pumping and overheating your engine.

There is no radiator cap, the "overflow" is the radiator cap.

96 ford contour poer steering fluid


Open the hood and look at the very back corner (passenger side) of the engine compartment, there will be a white plastic bottle with a black thread on lid. This is where the power steering fluid goes. The bottle has marks on the side of it to indicate how far to fill if needed.
