Pull the cap on the distributor. Under the rotor you will see a plastic cover with 8 raised areas on it. If there is a crack in any one of the areas it will cause the problem that you are describing. You might have to buy a new distributor.

SOURCE: 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 XC 4x4 5.7 Hard To Start

It is probably the fuel pump. If I remember the number correctly, this fuel system needs about 50 lbs to open a valve.
Until this valve opens, no fuel gets to the fuel nozzels.

I have a 1996 gmc yukon 4x4 have flood problems I have put in new fuel pump has good fuel pressure changed coolant sensors changed throttle body changed computer plugs wires distributor cap and button coil...

Possibly a busted fuel pressure regulator diaphragm. The regulator is mounted to the end of the fuel rail.
With the engine idling, pull the vacuum line off the regulator port. If gas comes out of the port, replace the regulator.

1996 GMC Suburban - Quit Running While Driving, Will Not Start

Listen at the back by the fuel tank for a 1 to 2 second prime cycle whirr from the tank when turning the key to run position after it has been off for at least 10 seconds.
No noise means no running pump.
....and no noise means.....
Most likely it will need a new fuel pump....80%
Fuel pump relay 10%
Fuse or bad wiring 10%

The quick fix to get home is to crank the truck to create oil pressure to fire the pump......and while cranking WHACK the tank hard with a 2by4 or something like that....to jar the pump..... and it may start running long enough to get it somewhere to be repaired.
This works 60% of the time on a dead pump.

If you do hear a whirrr.....you most likely need a ignition module or crank or dist pickup.

1998 gmc 4.3 starts up but loses power 3-5 mins later, will restart and run again for another short time, fuel filter has just been replaced.

Install a pressure gauge, start and run 3-5 minutes and watch the pressure. You should see the pressure maintain as it did when first started. If it begins to drop, the fuel pump has gotten weak and is starting to fail.
Let me know what you find.
Regards.

Stales when itles or going down road ones or twice a day sometimes not at all. but always starts right up.

Sounds like fuel pump is going,if you have it replaced don't buy the re-condition ones they sell, junk.I tried and 1 yr.later I'm replacing it again.New ones are 350.00,used are 250.00 so now I've put 600.00 dollars in fuel pumps.SUCKS.Hope this helps you!

Truck sometimes starts, sometimes quits after running

It sounds like you have a defective fuel pump or a bad fuel pressure regulator.
