Pull the cap on the distributor. Under the rotor you will see a plastic cover with 8 raised areas on it. If there is a crack in any one of the areas it will cause the problem that you are describing. You might have to buy a new distributor.

SOURCE: truck just shuts off
I own the same 3500 GMC 6.5 diesel truck with the same problem. We replaced the brain under the upper turbo hood and it fixed it pronto. No more shutoffs

had this problem on my neighbors 98 chevy truck with the same engine !!
it turnd out too be the fuel pressure regulator,you have too pull the upper intake too replace it!!

have it tested using a manual gage if still low then main baring ore most likely bad that would mean a over hall if is really low and bearings bad should be making rattle noise when started up first few seconds

It is probably the fuel pump. If I remember the number correctly, this fuel system needs about 50 lbs to open a valve.
Until this valve opens, no fuel gets to the fuel nozzels.
