I would say a few things here, First of all it might have helped to have some details on what vehicle this is on???
would get a code reader on it and eliminate the guessing game. if you don't have one, then, you could be looking at any number of sensors, MAP, mas air flow, Distributor faulty, coil/coil pack faulty, ignition module, crank sensor, without any details all I can do is guess for you. get a code reader on it. good luck.

You HALL EFFECT SENSOR in the distributor controls both spark and fuel pulse---check there first for a defect (bad sensor/stripped distributor shaft).

Check the crankshaft sensor or read codes off of the OBD-II system to see if that describes a problem that would cause the car to crank but not start and run on its own.

98 nissan frontier will start sputtering and sometimes die. Finally the other day it got hot (low on coolant) and died. Now it wont start. It turns over and sounds the same but wont start.

this depends on how hot, if you drove awhile when it was overheating you may have done damage or not its hard to say, the first thing is to try to get it running then figure out why the coolant was low, you will need to check for spark first, remove a sparkplug wire and place it near a ground, remove at the plug and stick a screwdriver in the boot place near ground like engine or metal bracket, have someone spin the key and see if theres spark,if theres spark then spray starting fluid into throtlebody and see if it starts for a bit, these test will tell you if its a spark or fuel problem, if it runs on starting fluid then you may have a bad fuelpump, if theres no spark, then i would have the computer scanned for codes these codes will help in pin pointing the problem, it could be a coil or crank sensor, hope this helps.
