I once had this problem on a chevy and found the after market starter holes made the engagement too tight. Drilling larger holes solved the problem, allowing a little clearence between the gears when meshed.

Replace starter. Car has been running fine for last 2 weeks, however today car won't start. Battery ok. What's the likely problem?

Ronald,
When you replaced the starter, I assume you did disconnect the battery. Did you clean the posts before putting your battery cable back on? I replaced my battery a couple of months ago and did not clean them and my van ran fine for several days and then one day would not start. Cleaned the posts and cable ends and everything worked fine. Just a thought. Hope this helps!

Yes, sounds like you have a loose or bad connection somewhere in the systems you have worked on. Corroded connection surfaces can cause strange things. Double check all your work. Polish or scrape all connection surfaces to bright metal. Road salt is a strong corrosion agent.

Western star electrical, I have replaced batteries x 4, new alternator, about 4 weeks ago, working fine up until last Tuesday, now not starting. Appears to be power drainage somewhere. Has anyone got ideas...

the usual thing is a light left on that is over looked try the trunk, glove box even under hood,if all off have a drop test done by a mechanic ,i would guess that the starter motor is the culprit, if no lights etc left on ,as may not be drawing enough from battery to start vehicle this can be a intermitent problem and a new battery could mask this until the battery gets weaker try to supply the starter so you replace battery and so it goes on again till you replace that one your on 4 right so have the starter checked

The starter needs to be shimed away or closer to the flex plate which ever it needs to stop the grinding before it damages the flex plate.

DID YOU CHECK THE GRIDE HEATER OR SELENIODE
CUMMINS USE GRIDE HEATER (INTAKE HEATER) TO REPLACE GLOW PLUGS
SELENOIDE IS SPECIAL FOR THAT JOB MAY LOOK LIKE REGULAR BUT ITS NOT
CHECK WITH KEY ON EARLY IN AM TO SEE IF HEATER IS GETTING POWER
USED AT 12 VOLT TEST LIGHT AT HEATER INPUT MAKE SURE GROUND IS GOOD
IF NO POWER CHECK SELENOIDE TO SEE IF POWER IS THERE IF NO POWER
CHECK LIVE SIDE OF SELENIDE THEN CHECK SIGNAL SIDE (KEY ACTIVATED SMALL WIRE) IF NO SIGNAL POWER CHECK FUSE IF NO MAIN POWER BACK TRACK TO BATTERY

the remote starter is not going to damage the starter, but if wired wrong it could damage the wiring or fuses, or run the battery down from a short.

I have a 96 grand cherokee. the starter won't turn. I have a 2 month old battery, all the connections are tight, there were no indications of starter problems. it started just fine all day then nothing out...

Pull out, check and switch out the Starter Relay with a non-engine function Relay in your IPM-Fuse and Relay box, and retry starting. The Relay Identifications are located on the back (inside) portion of the IPM Cover. If the Starter works and the other (non-engine operation) function does not = the Relay is bad and needs to be replaced. OR: If the Starter works and the other function works:
a) The original Starter Relay is going bad and should be replaced as soon as the other function quits working.
b) The connections of the Relays into the IPM were corroded/oxidized and unplugging/replugging the Relays made a better connection.
I just fixed an exact problem this weekend by switching out the Relays. The vehicle STARTED!
