Question about 1989 Mitsubishi Montero

1 Answer

Have to keep your foot on the throttle when you first start it to keep it running, runs really choppy cold. AS the engine warms, the motor smooths out and runs like it should. As long as it is warm it will do right, if it cools off, you have to go through the same process of warming it back up??? it has a remanufactured head, reman carb, I cleaned the egr valve, tuned it up, new coil. Lost??

Sounds like a problem with the choke. either needs adjusted or replaced.

Testimonial: "it has a reman carb that was supposed to have everything set from the factory. it has been bench flow tested and live motor tested. only been on the vehicle for 300 miles or so. worked fine until I removed the egr valve and cleaned it. that is when the problem started."

I would try to clean the IAC with a little CHEMTOOL and see if that helps first.

Hi there,
there is a screw(situated in a hole) on the throttle body and this can be adjusted to increase the rpm. anticlock to raise the rpm.

SOURCE: pajero diesel when starting from cold, runs for

It's definitely your injection pump seals mate.....common prob with these engines. My 1994 2.8TD was exactly the same until I had the sealls replaced. I went for the complete reconditioning and not just the main seal and it cost me £519 in total. Dunks

I would say that the choke sensor (or whatever it is called) went bad & isn't telling the computer that it's cold & requires more fuel. Instead of starter fluid, did you try to push the foot feed 1 or 2 times?

I would take it by any auto parts store to have them pull codes from the computer. They should be able to tell you the problem. However, I would suspect the IAC (idle air controller) to be faulty.

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

Remove IAC motor/valve on side of throttle body that regulates idle especially under load conditions, and clean it & the port good with throttle body cleaner & re-try. If it cures it for a while, then does it again, replace it with new one.

Colt idle problem.

Most likely you have a bad Idle motor which is a small motor mounted on the intake manifold. If the motor can run better with your foot on the gas but dies if removed then it is probably this. This motor is controlled by the OBDII computer which gets it's control signal from the temp sensor which is located either on the radiator or engine block (which could also be bad), if the electric fan (if equipped) turns on then this is not the problem part, but the idle motor is. Another possibility is that you have some bad /cracked vacuum hoses which should be checked for first, before replacing the idle motor.

1991 dodge colt won't idle when engine is cold.

probably oil, it may be too thick when it's cold but once it warms up it liquefies and your engine runs smoothly. you could try changing oil, I'm guessing if you have a high performance oil the chances this is the problem may be greater since high performance things are usually geared towards working well when everything is hot
