The sensor that signals the onboard computer sends signal it is odd center. This can mean a twisted crank shaft however mine has been going on and off sometimes staying off for months . This would not be a twisted crankshaft but sensor is defective or the onboard computer needs analyzed and maybe replaced..

Hi Miss Chug:
I'd start by using some carb/injector cleaner and make sure that the fuel delivery system is working properly.
If this is a carb type engine, make sure the automatic choke is not sticking.

2005 navigator chugs when driving

If this vehicle has a double overhead cam, labeled DOHC on the engine covers, it can have a "Cam Phaser" problem. The chugging is caused by the cam timing being mismatched.
A sound is often produced by the engine such that it mimics a Diesel engine and the sound disappears above 2000rpm.
There is a lot of reading material about this defect on the Internet. Many other potential problems would usually be triggering a "check engine" light. Even a bad EGR valve would eventually show up.
About all that is left would be a fuel pressure problem, sometimes caused by missed reading on a crankshaft sensor.
Let me know of the cure once you try these.

The first thing that needs to be done here is to have the engine control module scanned for fault codes, based on the results then move on.

I have a 1999 ford contour...running power...chug chug chug...engine lighrt on..only code it is throwing is for the egr valve...when you have to excelerate up a hill it has no

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve may be stopped up with carbons. This would account for some loss of power as well as odor if leaking around intake. If I remember correctly, egr tube originates just above catalytic converter on this model. Condition may be early signs of cat failure ( commonly accompanied by "rotten egg" odor). I recommend having emission system checked by certified tech to avoid uneccessary component replacement.
