Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

So I heard my throw out bearing making some noise. When I push the clutch in the noise stops and when I let the clutch out the throw out bearing was howling a little. Then I was driving down the freeway in 5th and the tranny went bam and would not drive. It popped out of gear when it went bam and the throwout bearing was screaming. When I put it in 1st to try to drive it the truck would not move and acted like it was locked up. The guy I got it from said the tranny was rebuilt a year ago. Do you think that it is just the throw out bearing or could that have caused problems with the transmission????

Ooh this sounds bad your gonna have to remove the trans inspection plate and look to see what got damaged with light squeaky throwout bearings are a warning of bigger things to come could be a total failure of clutch packs and pressure plates

SOURCE: won't go into gear to drive. may be transmission?

If the clutch has never been changed most likely it is that. The way you can check it is by removing the transmission and looking at the clutch disc. It could be transmission syncros but I am willing to bet you just need a new clutch.

SOURCE: rebuilding 1995 honda civic transmission

Did you make sure that the tork converter was all the way forward first if not then you will need to take the transmission back out and make sure that the converter has either automatic trany fluid in it or 184/85 gear oil depending on whether or not you have automatic trasmission or manual fill it up until you can put your finger in it and then rotate converter clock wise and it should slip into place before putting trasmission back into car and if after doing that and you still are having trouble take it to a transmission shop to have them do it for you.

2010 seat ibiza 1.6 sport sort of growling noise sometimes stoes for like 2 sec,s then starts again and stops when clutch pressed in.

indications are a failing throw out bearing for the clutch or clutch plate getting worn out AS the clutch plate lining wears , the pressure plate fingers come back closer to the throw out bearing causing it to spin
if you can make an adjustment on the slave cylinder push rod or clutch cable to give the bearing a nit more clearance the noise may not be there as it will not be spinning from the pressure plate fingers

When I am stopped I get a noise from my 5 spd manual until I push in the clutch and the noise goes away.

the noise when in neutral is a bearing noise
it can be from a failing throw out bearing that is rattling until you put pressure on it ( will have to be replaced eventually) or an input shaft into the gear box which will have to be replaced sooner rather than later
IF it is hydraulic system with the engine idling see if you can manually pull the release lever away from the throw out bearing ( pushing the clutch slave piston back into the cylinder. If the noise stops it will be a throw out bearing
unfortunately if the slave cylinder is a concentric type (inside the bell housing )and not external you will not be able to test it

Throw out bearing may be the problem. Check with your Nissan parts supplier for details on how to replace it.

Does it make this noise every time you push in on the clutch, or just when coasting?
If it always makes noise when you push in the clutch, it could be the throw out bearing.
But if only coasting and not when turning left a little, then a front wheel bearing is more likely.
The brake will also wear faster, get hotter, feel a little spongy at first hit, and the brake pedal will vibrate if the wheel bearing is going. But if it is a wheel bearing, you can wait until it is worse.

Yes you most likely have a bad throw out bearing. If you replace the bearing you would do yourself a favor and replace the clutch and pressure plate while you are there.

While I do not know the car well my first thoughts go to the clutch throw-out bearing. With time these fail and I have heard them make a howling type noise which it typical of bearing failure.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom
