the 15 mm that is on the tension pulley is not to be taken off. put the bolt back in snug. put the 15mm back on it and pull upwards on the bolt/pulley and that will remove the tension fro the belt enough to remove the belt. and do the same thing to install the new belt. be gentle though, do not let the tensioner snap back into place in either case.

The serpentine belt tensioner / pulley is on the front of the engine, and part of the belt 'routing'.

Its job is to put tension on the belt as it drives the other devices like the power steering pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor.

It is an aluminum casting that mounts with a single bolt to the engine. The pulley is attached to the arm.

There are a few ways to move / pry the arm inwards, thus releasing the tension on the belt for removing/installing: grab on the pulley bolt (15mm?) with a wrench, or some later models have an opening for a 3/8th socket wrench to attach to directly without a socket.

if this happened you bent the valves in the engine and the cylinder head must be removed, here are full instructions for a timing belt replacement.

Required tools:
13mm open end wrench 10mm shallow and deep socket 8mm socket long flathead screwdriver 17mm deep socket T50 torx socket 1/4", 3/8ths and 1/2" ratchets and extensions E10 inverted torx sockets 6mm Allen wrench 15mm open end wrench 7mm socket 12mm open end wrench 14mm socket 12mm socket 8mm, 9mm and 10mm Allen head sockets 19mm socket pry bar needle nose pliers
If you are doing this because your timing belt broke you will also need to buy a complete cylinder head, head gasket set, and both idler pulleys. ALL DAEWOO MODELS WILL BREAK THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST VALVES WHEN THE TIMING BELT BREAKS.
Start by removing the air cleaner assembly from the throttle body, remove the air filter and housing jack up the vehicle and remove the wheel, remove the plastic shielding in front of the accessory drive belt assembly, remove the accessory drive belt, place a jack with a block of wood on top underneath the engine oil pan remove the front engine mount, remove the crank shaft pulley ( the 4 Allen head bolts only not the 17mm bolt in the center.) remove the metal plate behind the engine mount bracket on the engine, remove the plastic timing belt cover 3 clips on top 2 10mm bolts on bottom. Rotate the engine until the #1 cyl. is at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke or line up the crankshaft timing mark with the mark on the inner timing belt cover ( notch in cover with notch in pulley) on the camshaft pulleys -- ( intake cam line up the line on the pulley with the line on the inner cover)( exhaust cam line up the arrow on the pulley with the arrow on the inner cover) loosen the 13mm bolt in the belt tensioner and using the Allen wrench rotate the tab until there is slack in the belt. Remove the belt. At this time I would recommend you replace the water pump, both plastic idler pulleys as they tend to overheat and lockup, and the belt tensioner. Make sure all your marks are lined up, you may need a helper to hold the Exhaust Cam in place as it tends to move during belt installation. Put the timing belt underneath the crankshaft pulley, install the belt leaving the intake cam for last and NO BELT SLACK on the right side between the crank and the exhaust cam. Once the belt is installed rotate the crankshaft over 2 revolutions and make sure is rotates freely, and your timing marks are aligned perfectly if not the engine will not run properly, tension the belt as needed. Installation is the same as removal.

To clarify, on the DOHC engine, the intake cam gear has a line on it, and the exhaust cam gear has an arrow on it. These should be lined up with the corresponding line and arrow on the VALVE COVER, pointing straight up. I just went through this process over the weekend, and spent quite a bit of time looking for these marking as I had removed the valve cover. Once I found them, it was plain and simple.
In addition, be sure to not over tighten the belt when reinstalling. The tensioner has markings on it for "old" and "new". DO NOT adjust past "new", as the car will sound like a jet engine, and the belt will not last for very long.
One more item that you may as well replace while you are in there is the cam position sensor if you have not already, as there have been issues with them, and the timing housing has to be opened to get to it

was this the bolt in center of the tensioner pulley? if so you will need to remove and replace the tensioner assembly, if not which bolt did you break?

Could be that tension pulley is sticking from time to time. Try replacing it and see if that helps.

A tensioner pulley is used to maintain proper belt tension. Some belt tensioners are locked in place with a bolt or nut after correct adjustment has been made. Other designs use spring tension to automatically tension the belt. Advice: Too much tension will cause a strain on any bearings involved. Not enough tension can lead to slippage or belts jumping off. Tensioner pulley bearings are of the sealed type and can not be serviced. Check to make sure that there is no wobble or play in the bearing and that it turns smoothly. If any play or roughness is found, the tensioner pulley should be replaced. If spring tension is being used, ensure the integrity of the spring

To re;move the pulley you'll need a 'breaker bar' or a long socket wrench. Just slip the correct socket over the bolt and unloosen it. If your Voyager was built in Canada, the nuts and bolts are usually metric. Make certain that you're using the correct size so as not to strip the bolt. It's a pain because of the lack of room. Just take it slow and easy.

The steering pump belt was loose so I tried tightening the tensioner. The belt only got looser.The adjustment bolt seems to be stripped. What can I do to manually tighten it?


you tried to move the adjuster but didnt slacken the supporting bolts first ,sorry you will just have to renew it ,ir slacken the bolts holding the pump and then pull it tight with a crowbar then tighten the bolts again

How to change the fan belt in my 1988 BMW 735i


The alternator and water pump share the same belt. You will have to remove all three as the fan/alternator belt is in the back. The alternator and AC compressor both have bolts which you need to loosen to get them to swing forward and release tension. Make sure you rotate onlt the backside bolts. The frontside bolts on the brackets have teeth which are used to increase tension. If you turn those, you will strip the brackets and have to buy new ones. The link below gives you the proper sizes.

did you remove the belt before you tried to loosen the bolt? when you say main pulley, do you mean the pulley on the tensioner? by tensioner belt bolt do you mean the bolt secureing the pulley to the tensioner arm?

How change a belt


the serpentine belt of the 98 corolla is difficult to get to cause theres so little room between the engine and the fender wall, but at the top of the engine on the passenger side, theres a small, black and silver compression spring, two bolts through it follow it down to the tensioner pulley, my bolt on the tensioner pully was stripped so i removed the compression spring assembly completely, yeah its tuff, but possible, if you can avoid it, then avoid it, but thats the key to getting that belt off or on. hope this helps good luck

Why does the bolt on the belt tensioner turn instead of the hole tensioner move? I am replacing the alternator


Hello! It's because the bolt is also the shaft that the tensioner rides on - therefore it needs to spin freely on the bolt. Hope that makes sense, and helps!

Serpentine belt too tight to install


I had the same problem when trying to replace the serpentine belt on my 2001 Trooper. The Maintenance book was very vague and I couldn't tell exactly how the tension was taken off the belt, but it did clearly identify the tensioner pulley. I first removed the pulley and looked for some kind of slot that would give me the adjustment I needed, but no slotted adjustment is present on the 01 Trooper. I had to do some research so I pulled of the tensioner assembly and found that there is a spring coil which keeps tension on the belt constant, and eliminates any belt alignment problems.

The Litens style tensioner uses a spring to apply pressure towards the serpentine belt. The way to relax the spring is to use your 14mm socket and ratchet and force the pulley down by driving the pulley nut in the clockwise direction. This forces the spring to compress and the pulley to drop giving the needed clearance to get your new belt in place.
