what oil, ? not all oil is the same, and if it dont abate fast (noise ) its time to do a real oil pressure test. but again you never aswered the qustion, or your locations as that dicates, oil to uses, YUKON,or Florida keys ? just a tiny hint. and if pressure is good, then we use a $5 stethoscope to find locatiion of exact noise. noise is doom, never give up finding out if doom is true, or it can get far worse.

i turn to page, 7-45 and see the oil chart based on climate. 10 choices, see that page. so if in the YOKON, you use 5w30

in louisiana. sounds like its coming from the area in the middle of block but on the side of it near the exhaust manifold and injectors. since the motor is sideways it would be on the left side of the engine looking at the pulleys

if winter only drops to 0deg, F, use 10w-30/40/50

  • _-__-___-_
    _-__-___-_ Oct 20, 2013

if winter only drops to 20f ,like here in tx. we use 20w-40/50

  • _-__-___-_
    _-__-___-_ Oct 20, 2013

now you know what oil to use. right, no location stated.

  • _-__-___-_
    _-__-___-_ Oct 20, 2013

i always check pressure first, why, to avoid damage. you can do what you want its your car, but if you let pressrue drop too much the rear rod bearing can fail.

some have timing belts others Chains, if the oil pressure drop the chain will scream and pound. some do this at cold start and stop in 2 seconds.

error , flust is FLUSH, no way to edit in fixya, sad but true. and my fingers are fat.

?what engine?, or if you cant tell, post the vin minus last 3 digits

  • _-__-___-_
    _-__-___-_ Oct 20, 2013

that will be ok. did you use the wrong filter, i cant imagine puressure dropping with wrong filter and not having lake of oil on the driveway. but if the wrong filter,it might go in to bypsss mode and pressure is better, but no filteration at all, so its not in bay pass mode.

probing front, covers, valve covers, listen to all accessory devices P/s pump, alt/ A/C, all things spinning, for bad sounds. we need direction , if in the engine what side makes the most sound. this is not hard to do but is dangerous, due to spinning object, no loose clothing and burns on exhuast pipes.

ahh the 1.5L DOHC , belt drive cam, HLA lifters. spec pressure is 43-57@3000 RPM

  • _-__-___-_
    _-__-___-_ Oct 20, 2013

id say below 20psi at idle is cause for concern. many cars the idiot lamp is 3-5psi, so stays off when pressure is at 6psi a bad act if ever,

  • _-__-___-_
    _-__-___-_ Oct 20, 2013

what i do is check pressure if good then drop all accessor belts. for 5 min cold test. this tells me, its in them motor or someithing else attached.

seen exh, flange loose , inake pipe mounts loose. all rattle like hell. most 4cyl engine shake hard. and invite external rattles. i find these by pushing all parts on the engine with a wooden stick, if the noise stops or changes, bingo for loose. this cam ,twin as bucket lifters. HLA, maybe one is collapsed, can be heard easy with any stethoscope, at valve cover, maybe oil added had dirt, fall in and jam up the HLA port some way, (very hard to do)???

try draining the oil and putting kerosene in the engine, then run the engine for a minute and drain, this will clean out a lot of gunked up debris in your motor, when you refill the oil put some conditioner in with it like Lukas or Risloan. You may have to do this a few times in a short period to get the system all cleaned out.

SOURCE: kia 2.4 optima 07 engine makes knocking noise when I press fuel pad to move..I can't press fuel pad strongly the knocking noise increases more and may broken the rings

Sound like you have spun a bearing do to a blown head gasket. Does the oil on the dipstick look almost like a chocolate milkshake in color? If so your coolant has reached the oil pan and that can definitely cause the engine to spin a bearing causing a loud knocking sound.

I have a 1999 Crown Victoria it mAKES A tapping

If it is a clear metal tap,not a knock and usually is a little worse when first starting the engine and there is no miss to the engine..it most likely is a sticking or dirty hydraulic lifter..you can ask your local auto supply for a good oil additive that helps clean dirty lifters. Also after using that product for a while I suggest an oil change maybe a little lighter oil and include another additive treatment along with the oil change...this should clean and free them up..good luck..

Loud knocking/banging inside dash/glovebox

We had the same issue on our 2009 Flex. The problem was the motor or the gate (I can't remember which) that switches where the air comes out for the climate control. Took it to the dealer and had it replaced under warranty. It didn't take long (maybe 30min - 1hr).

It seemed like the system had a built-in fail safe that shut the motor down after a few seconds when the gate didn't make it to the desired selection. If you change the blower around when the fan is running (e.g. switch from floor to bi to dash to defrost), you'll probably hear the thumping come back as the gate tries to move, but can't.

I had oil change in my saturn 2001 sl after the oil and security and airbag lights started to turn on after 2 days car started making a knocking sound while driving. and it died on me when im at a stop...

best advice here is to ask a local mechanic to have a look as engine shouldnt have started knocking with teh new oil in unless someone has put tranny fluid into teh engine or something stupid ,the lights for the airbag shouldnt be connected but the oil light ?? Do not drive car untill a mechanic has come around and checked it out for you though as this oil light coming on and knocking noise is serious

I have a 2003 Chevy Impala. I ran my car with no oil and now I'm hearing a loud ticking/knocking noise coming from under my valve cover. I added 2 bottles of oil after finding out that I didnt have any...

might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-0.jpg 2003-chevy-wutfveiel3ypko01ydor435x-5-2.jpg

Engine has knocking noise. Oil is good. Started

Engine knock Huh? In order to qualify the term "Knock", Let me get you to perform some simple task/observation. Typically, if you hear a noise on top of your motor that can be described as a light knock, usually going tap, tap, tap, tapping along at double the tempo, of your motor spinning, Your oil pump may be having trouble getting oil to the top where the valve's and rocker arms are. If you hear a "Knock" by bending over or kneeling beside one of your "front wheel well's"and stick your head up to the well, providing a vantage point to "hear" whats going on at the lower part of the engine. A knock from here will/can indicate a potentially overheated, under lubricated, rod or crank bearing that could seize the motor. This (theretical) crank bearing would be sounding off at half the tempo of the rocker arms above., with a deep, dark klunk that would defintly present itself as the sort of noise that damages metal parts. Now, that being said.....common sense goes a long way, people....1.) Most people are aware of the maintenance that has been performed on a particular engine, the quality and quantity of that maint. and when the last time it was ran out of oil or water. For those who fall into the " lack of maintenence" catagory, you probably already know why your engine or driveline sound as it does. If you happen to take particulary good care of your car, there is a good chance that whatever noise or "happening" might be going on, it'll be much easier to remedy. There are always exceptions to every rule. Remember, its not what will happen, it's what can happen. Take care of your car, and it will take care of you. Theroad
