What is it , 91 or 99, the blue box above says both!
ill answer 91.
old car, and this year , limphome mode can be very bad to happen.
1: is it tuned up? did you do the 60kmile service schedules? ??????
2: is the check engine light on key on, if not fix that now.
3: is the check engine light out ,running? yes, pull the DTC errors now.
if NO CEL running that means this old (dumb) ECU can not see this gross loss of power.
This is very possible,
reason common , there are 50 reasons.
1: engine has low compression, say 80psi not 150+
got bad timing belt? if not chain engine. you never stated engine type.
2: MAF weak. or inducton air leaks. making MAF LIE.
3: EGR stuck open
4: fuel pressure low, not doing the 60k skips filter, dah?
5: bad spark plugs. 60k.
6: air cleaner packed with bugs ,dirt or mouse nest. look.
7: injectors clogged
8: bad fuel. ill stop and not go 40 more.

a mech, knows all these facts. and never considers them.
cept the skipped service.
he does the tests and lets the results guide him to truth.
saving a fortune on guessed at good parts.
it called diagnosis.
if you want to guess, do so and say so.
if you want to do tests. say so, do you want to buy tools? and gauges? say so.
To me DIY means doing all that. and not guessing
others DIY means, see what bobby did, and replaced and Ill copy bobby and go broke.
it's is your choice.

Hi Missippirebe, I think you should replace the fuel filter and if the problem persists check fuel pump pressure. It should be at around 3.7 bar. Regards John

My 97 kia sportage has no power going up hills

could be alot of thing kia's a/c draind alot of horse power ,plus going up hill.try turn of a/c on hills.thats the owner of 3 kia's opinion . engine lacks power obstructed exhaust ,catylitic converter. defective plugs and or wires. fuel injection needs cleaned , air filter ,automatic transaxle fluid to much or to little and last my favorite the emmision control system . these are just the main culprits . only you can be the judge of how steep the hills are and how bad the power loss is
