Question about 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 Club Cab

1 Answer

My 1996 dodge 2500 pickup with a 5.9 gas engine auto trans will not shift.it seems like its stuck in a high gear as well because its very slow to accelerate...but fine when i get speed up.it wont move until about 1200 rpm...i dropped tranny pan and oil was not burnt nor was there excessive brass or steel contamination.i re/re the filter and new oil but no change.previous owner said he has trans rebuilt 7 years ago and after only a few monthes he said the problem appeared.he drove it like this for 100000kms!!!im convinced the trans is still in good shape but something like a control solinoid or sensor has failed.how can i eliminate each sensor ...electronic shift control ect????any ideas or thoughts on what i may be up against?once im past 30 kms per hour it seems fine but i dont feel it shift.i could not spin the tires on a skating rink.thanks for helping!!!

have the trans checked out, sounds like it might be in 2 gears when your shifting into 2nd, causing it to bind up, is there any noise when this problem occurs? a bad bearing or worn syncro rings could be the cause

1966 Falcon with C4 Transmission I changed out fluid and filter

Generally, what causes C-4's and C-6's to be slugish going into gear, is the seals on the servo pistons are getting hard. The servo pistons are what apply pressure on the clutch packs, when the seals get hard the oil can blow past the piston and the clutch won't engage. It's worse when the the trany is cold and usualy gets better as the oil gets warm. You could try some transmission conditioner, the cheep stuff works as good as the high dollar stuff. Don't rev the engine to try to get it to go into gear, the clutch is trying to engage and you will burn the clutch up pack. If the clutches were replaced 3k miles ago why didn't they put seals in it at the same time?

sounds like trans has gone bad, last service of filter and fluid? clogged screen or low/burnt fluid would effest but if clunking sounds like trans is shot

PICKUP DOWN SHIFTS WHEN ACCELERATED

Attach a diagnostic computer to the leads on your engine.
Check the codes to confirm that the onboard computer is choosing to shift under the correct conditions.

Or, get your local Dodge dealer (before they go bankrupt) to run the computer-diagnosis.
