What model Golf. If it is between Mk1 and Mk3 (1996), you most likely have worn nylon bushes that guide the shifter. This allows the shifter to misalign.
Parts to repairs are quite cheap - then depends on how mechanical you are as to handling it yourself.

Testimonial: "It is a 81 rabbit pickup its vary odd because going from second to third is never a problem but if i have it in third an take it out an then try an put it back it doesn't want to go back but if i put it back in second an push the shifter to the right then i can usually get it back into third"

SOURCE: Car is shifting hard into

Been there, Done that!!! Bought a 2000 bonneville used..once the car warms up it starts shifting rough and down shifting rough. I drove it all the way to work and it ran like a champ till i started start, stop drivin in the street and the tranny warmed up. I retured it to the dealer and it is a solenoid in the tranny that pumps the fluid to detect the shift pattern. that is what they fed me anyways. they fixed it for free. it wasnt too cheap..i got the slip and it was around 1300 dollars. im no car expert by far but this is what happened to me! hope it gives you an idea

What is wrong with Mercury Transmission?

I suspect that it could be a faulty pressure control sensor unit
run the fault codes and check for such a fault or a TCC solenoid /servo not operating properly

Trouble downshifting

If it only happens between third and second, it could be the syncro for second gear is worn out.

4wd first gear ok but problem with changing to second and third . My reverse gear works .

"Generally" in manual transmissions, first and reverse gear are on the same gear cluster, thus if one works both do.
However, the remaining gears are on what 'used' to be referred to as the 'cluster gear' and this 'cluster' could fail, still leaving you with first and reverse gears.
Hope this helps.

Im getting ready to change the transmission on my 92 gmc jimmy (4.3 vortec v-6 automatic). I got a transmission from a junkyard and ineed to know how to set the torque converter and the throttle cable when...

put the torque converter on the gearshaft ans spin it to the right while pushing on it... it should slide back about 2-3 times.. youll know when its all the way on... the throttle doesnt have anything to do with your tranny... i think your refering to the kickdown cable.... leave it set like it is.. when your driving, and hit the gas hard, if it downshifts REAL early or doesnt seemto down shift thats when you need to adjust it to where it feel like it downshift right...
hope this helps

Truck wont shift out of first gear at the right rpm. Some times second gear is there others it is not. Same for third. trans dont slip when its in gear.

you'll want to check your detent cable at the throttle body, if the cable is tight then it's out of adjustment. you should have slack in it. Basically it's trying to stay in low gear because it thinks your at wide open throttle and needs to downshift. There's a clip that you have to pull out and the pull the cable forward and at the same time put the clip back, this will give you slack. You may have to adjust it a few times.

Before any fixing is started see if the car has a trouble codes and pull them. The connector is blue and located in the lower right hand side of the passenger side of the car. You have to remove the plastic and use a jumper wire or a paper clip to jump the terminal. watch the blinks for the code numbers. If it is one long blink then that counts as ten, then how many others blinks. like, 10 + 5 =15. Hope this worls for you.
